Since 2013, IWC Schaffhausen has accompanied the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team as Official Engineering Partner – and in the 14^th year of the partnership, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer unveils its newest team watch. Going back to 2022, the official team watches reflect the shared ethos of performance, engineering and cutting-edge design. Comprising various chronographs and an automatic model, the series is anchored in joint characteristics and design codes – such as the use of advanced performance materials like titanium, ceramic and Ceratanium^®, alongside dials or accents in the team’s signature PETRONAS green shade. Like its predecessors, the fourth team watch is an expression of IWC’s watchmaking legacy and the uncompromising performance that the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team showcases on racing circuits around the world.

The new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team (Ref. IW388121) is a robustly engineered chronograph equally at home in the paddock and on the wrist. The defining feature of this edition is its dial in a deep, saturated purple. The color is a tribute to the city of Singapore and its national flower; an orchid bred in 1893 by Armenian-Singaporean horticulturist Agnes Joaquim. It serves as Singapore’s national emblem and is said to represent resilience, boldness and innovation – traits and values that are also found in the shared universe of IWC and the MercedesAMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team. Under its colorful surface, the Vanda Miss Joaquim hides the enormous complexity of nature – just like the pure, instrumentstyle dial of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 hides the complexity of the mechanical movement underneath. The launch of the new team watch also accompanies a new collection by adidas, the official team partner and kit supplier. The collection is centered around the core of adaptive precision in F1^TM engineering and the performance-driven identity of adidas.

As with all previous team watches, the new chronograph also carries accents in the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team’s signature color. The distinctive PETRONAS green shade marks the numerals and indices; applied as a luminescent coating on the hands, it cuts a compelling contrast against the dial’s rich purple. The eye-catching design is complemented by a purple rubber strap. Thanks to the EasX-CHANGE^® system, it can be swapped for another strap option at the touch of a button.

A MATERIAL FORGED FOR MOTORSPORT

The case, measuring 41 millimeters in diameter, is crafted from Grade 5 titanium – a material prized throughout Formula One^TM for its favorable strength-to-density ratio and resistance to heat. Titanium tips the scales at roughly half the weight of steel and does not corrode. The metal is not only used in engine components such as connecting rods and valves but also plays a direct role in ensuring drivers’ safety on the racetrack: the Halo device, which arches over the cockpit as a protective roll structure, is likewise machined from a high-strength titanium alloy. The watch’s titanium case carries a brushed finish that draws out the metal’s distinctive silvery-gray luster.

A CHRONOGRAPH ENGINEERED FOR PRECISION AND RESILIENCE

Beating inside is the IWC-manufactured 69385 caliber, a mechanical chronograph built on a classical columnwheel architecture and engineered with a focus on precision, reliability, and robustness. The stop minutes are indicated at 12 o’clock via IWC’s hallmark vertical subdial layout, making elapsed-time readings effortless and intuitive. This dial configuration has been a signature feature of IWC’s Pilot’s Chronographs for more than four decades. The combined day-date display at 3 o’clock adds a layer of everyday practicality. A bidirectional pawl winding system provides a 46-hour power reserve. Finished with Geneva stripes and circular graining, the movement can be viewed through the transparent sapphire-glass case back.

THE FOURTH OFFICIAL TEAM WATCH

The first team watch arrived at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix: the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team” (Ref. IW388108) in titanium. The following year, at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, IWC unveiled the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team (Ref. IW388306), featuring a Ceratanium^® case and polished black ceramic bezel with tachymeter scale. In 2025, IWC and its partner opened the season with the release of the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team (Ref. IW328210), a three-hand watch prized for its slender profile and versatility. Like its predecessors, the new team watch will be worn by team members trackside – mechanics, engineers and beyond – as well as by staff at the team’s headquarters in Brackley, England.

As Mercedes-Benz celebrates “140 Years of Innovation” with “140 Years. 140 Places.”, three new S-Class saloons are travelling to 140 selected locations worldwide, covering more than 50,000 kilometers across six continents and highlighting the brand’s technology, heritage, pioneering spirit, and global presence. Against this backdrop, IWC unveils a limited-edition Big Pilot’s Watch with the Perpetual Calendar ProSet. Marking one of IWC’s most innovative developments in perpetual calendars in decades, this highly innovative new mechanism was introduced earlier this year at Watches and Wonders in Geneva.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet 140 Years Mercedes-Benz (Ref. IW329603) is limited to 140 pieces – with each one embodying a year of pioneering innovation in the history of Mercedes-Benz. The brushed and polished 42-millimeter stainless steel case frames a black dial with solid gold appliqués and gold-plated hands. The minute track is printed in white for easy legibility. On the sapphire-glass case back, a historic logo commemorates this milestone occasion. Introduced in 1926 following the merger of Daimler MotorenGesellschaft (DMG) with Benz & Cie., it was the first logo for Mercedes-Benz, combining the laurel wreath, adopted from the Benz emblem, with DMG’s emblematic three-pointed star.

A NEW LEVEL OF FLEXIBILITY AND EASE OF USE

IWC’s journey into mechanical calendars began in 1985, when the company presented the perpetual calendar developed by legendary watchmaker Kurt Klaus. With the new Perpetual Calendar ProSet, the brand has now completely reimagined this complication, which remains one of the greatest challenges in watchmaking to this day. The new module is based entirely on gears and protected by four patents. As a result, the calendar can now be adjusted forward and – for the first time – also backward using a single position of the crown. This new approach makes the calendar adjustments in both directions as easy and intuitive as setting the time itself. Unlike most traditional perpetual calendars, the ProSet requires no additional pushers, no changes in crown position, and no complicated setting menus. Behind this apparent simplicity lies a true engineering feat, which requires components with intricate and highly complex geometries. To manufacture them, IWC uses the LIGA process, an advanced microstructuring technology based on lithography and electroforming.

DOUBLE MOON PHASE ACCURATE TO WITHIN ONE DAY EVERY 1,040 YEARS

The Perpetual Calendar ProSet displays its information on four subdials. The date is shown at 3 o’clock, the month at 6 o’clock, and the day of the week at 9 o’clock. The moon phase is positioned at 12 o’clock. Thanks to a newly calculated reduction gear, the display will deviate by only one day after 1,040 years. IWC’s signature Double Moon® ensures the moon is shown correctly for viewers in both the northern and southern hemispheres. The four-digit year display – another hallmark of IWC’s perpetual calendars – is located between 7 and 8 o’clock on the dial. The Perpetual Calendar ProSet is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82665 caliber, featuring a nickelphosphorus escapement and a silicon hairspring. The bidirectional Pellaton automatic winding system is reinforced with ceramic components and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring. This Big Pilot’s Watch is fitted on a black rubber strap. Thanks to the integrated EasX-CHANGE^® system, the strap can be swapped for another option without any tools.

A COLLECTION BUILT ON PERFORMANCE AND INNOVATION

The new Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet 140 Years Mercedes-Benz joins a collection that reflects many different facets of Mercedes-Benz. The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 AMG (Ref. IW388305) embodies the shared passion for performance and design that has linked IWC and Mercedes-AMG since 2004. As “Official Engineering Partner” of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team since 2013, IWC has also launched several team watches. The first was the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team” (Ref. IW388108) in 2022, followed in 2023 by the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team (Ref. IW388306) in Ceratanium^®. The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One^TM Team (Ref. IW328210) marked the start of the 2025 season.

With two striking special editions, IWC celebrated the shared utilitarian heritage of its Big Pilot’s Watch and the iconic G-Class “Geländewagen” from MercedesBenz: the Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 in 18-carat Armor Gold^® (Ref. IW501201) and the Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 (Ref. IW506201) – IWC’s first watch with a case made of a ceramic matrix composite (CMC), a material innovation developed in close collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

For 20 years, IWC Schaffhausen has been collaborating with the heirs of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, honoring the French pilot and author’s humanist values and literary legacy with numerous special editions. The mesmerising blue-dial editions inspired by “The Little Prince” have been a defining element of the partnership. Celebrating Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s most famous literary work, which has been translated into more than 650 languages and dialects, these editions have become a beloved signature within the IWC’s Pilot’s Watches collection. The timeless tale follows a young prince as he leaves his tiny asteroid and embarks on an epic journey through the cosmos to distant planets. Through his conversations with their inhabitants, he uncovers enduring truths about profound themes such as love, loss and friendship. To commemorate two decades of partnership, IWC introduces five anniversary edition Pilot’s Watches dedicated to the Little Prince, in a broad spectrum of case sizes ranging 36 to 43 millimetres.

The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW328301) features a 40-millimetre case, a crown and a case back ring made of 18-carat 5N gold. Its deep blue dial with a sunray finish beautifully contrasts the gold. The appliques are crafted from solid 18-carat 5N gold, while the hands are gold-plated and filled with Super-LumiNova^®. This distinctively elegant Pilot’s Watch is equipped with a blue rubber strap featuring an 18-carat 5N gold pin buckle and the EasX-CHANGE^® system for quick and easy strap changes. The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW328221) is housed in a 40-millimetre stainless steel case. It features a deep blue dial with a sunray finish, printed with white indices and numerals. The gold-plated hands are filled with Super-LumiNova^® for enhanced legibility. This watch also comes with a blue rubber strap featuring the EasX-CHANGE^® system. Both models are powered by the IWC-manufactured 32112 calibre, featuring an automatic winding system and a power reserve of 120 hours. The 18-carat 5N gold version boasts a tinted sapphire glass case back showcasing an illustration of the Little Prince. In contrast, the stainless steel version has a solid steel case back engraved with the same drawing. 
 

TWO CHRONOGRAPHS IN TRIBUTE TO THE LITTLE PRINCE 

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW378011) and the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW388120) are both crafted from stainless steel. The former has a case diameter of 43 millimetres, while the latter measures 41 millimetres. 

Both models are characterised by deep blue dials with a sunray finish, a hallmark of IWC’s special editions dedicated to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s famous novel. The dials feature indices and numerals printed in white. As a signature design element, the chronographs feature gold-plated hands filled with Super-LumiNova^®. The tinted sapphire glass case backs showcase The Little Prince, surrounded by the characteristic “Le Petit Prince” lettering, a moon and two stars. The chronographs are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre, a mechanical chronograph movement in classic column-wheel design storing a power reserve of 46 hours. The watches are fitted with durable blue rubber straps. The integrated EasX-CHANGE^® system allows wearers to change the straps quickly and easily without tools. 

The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW458802) features a 36-millimetre stainless steel case and a deep blue dial with a sunray finish. The indices and numerals are printed in white, while the gold-plated hands are filled with Super-LumiNova^® for enhanced legibility. The stainless steel case back is adorned with a detailed engraving of the Little Prince. This automatic model is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32102 calibre, which boasts a power reserve of 120 hours. It is f itted with a blue calfskin strap secured with a stainless steel pin buckle.

Ceramics exemplify the comprehensive expertise in advanced materials that IWC Schaffhausen has built up over the past four decades. Since pioneering this hard, scratch-resistant material in 1986, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer has continuously enhanced its expertise in this field. Significant developments have included watch cases crafted from brown silicon nitride, black boron carbide, or a ceramic matrix composite (CMC). Last year, IWC introduced its proprietary luminous ceramic technology, Ceralume^®, and presented the first concept watch. Now, this groundbreaking material innovation, combined with one of IWC’s signature complications, makes its official debut in the Pilot’s Watches collection. 

Limited to 250 pieces, the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume^® (Ref. IW505801) features a 46.5-millimetre case made of luminous white ceramic. The Ceralume^® case is paired with a white luminous dial and a white rubber strap, both enhanced with SuperLumiNova^® pigments. The indices and numerals are printed in a different shade of white on the dial, while the grey hands are filled with luminous material. This makes the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume^® a watch with two entirely different expressions. In daylight, it captivates with its varying shades of white and grey and the interplay of shiny and matte surfaces. In darkness, the watch transforms completely; the case, dial, and strap emit an intense bluish glow, while the numerals and hands appear as nothing but dark shadows against the fully luminous dial. 
 

CERALUME^® MARKS ANOTHER GROUNDBREAKING CERAMIC INNOVATION 

Ceralume^® is the result of a multi-year development effort by IWC’s engineering division XPL, which was supported by experts from RC Tritec. This leading Swiss technology company is renowned for its Super-LumiNova^® luminous pigments. Acting similar to a light-storage battery, this ceramic compound absorbs light energy from sunlight or artificial light and re-emits it as visible light, a cycle that can be repeated indefinitely. While conventional white ceramic is created by mixing zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides, luminous ceramic requires a blend of ceramic powders and Super-LumiNova^® pigments. The main challenge is achieving a completely homogeneous mixture of these raw materials, which have different particle sizes. To do this, IWC’s engineers designed a dedicated ball-milling process. Ceramic powders and Super-LumiNova^® pigments are placed in a rotating cylindrical drum partially filled with small balls. As the drum spins, the balls are lifted and then dropped in a cascading motion, using both impact and attrition to break down the mixture into a finer, more homogeneous powder. 
 

THE EMBLEMATIC PERPETUAL CALENDAR COMPLICATION 

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume^® features IWC’s legendary perpetual calendar complication, developed by Kurt Klaus in the 1980s. Mechanically programmed to recognize the varying lengths of months, the calendar also automatically adds a leap day every four years at the end of February. The date, weekday, month and moon phase are displayed across four subdials, while the four-digit year display is located between 7 and 8 o’clock. IWC’s signature Double Moon^® display shows the moon as seen from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Thanks to a precisely calculated reduction gear, it only deviates by one day after 577.5 years. 
 

HIGH-END AUTOMATIC CALIBRE WITH PELLATON WINDING SYSTEM 

The calendar module is powered by the IWCmanufactured 52616 calibre. Featuring a Pellaton winding system reinforced with components made of virtually wear-free ceramic, the movement stores a power reserve of 168 hours (7 days) in the mainspring. The luminous details even extend to the back of the watch, where the “Probus Scafusia” medallion integrated into the rotor is made of Super-LumiNova^® and glows in the dark. Decorated with circular graining and fitted with blued screws, the movement is visible through the transparent sapphire glass case back. 
 

A DEVELOPMENT FROM IWC’S ENGINEERING DIVISION XPL 

IWC Experimental (IWC XPL) is the in-house engineering division of IWC Schaffhausen. The department focuses on fundamental research in areas like shock protection and new materials. Its mission is to develop technologies, prototypes and products that are designed to enhance the durability of mechanical watches and extend their fields of application to environments with extreme conditions, such as space. The first brainchild of IWC XPL was the SPRIN-g PROTECT^® shock absorber system, followed by the luminescent ceramic technology Ceralume^®.

In Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s popular novel, “The Little Prince,” the young prince leaves his home asteroid, B-612, to explore the universe. During his journey, he visits various planets and meets their inhabitants, learning profound lessons about love, loss, and friendship. IWC Schaffhausen has been celebrating this timeless story with special-edition watches. Their signature feature is their deep blue dial with a sunray finish, reminiscent of the vastness of space. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer is now introducing its first “Le Petit Prince” edition made from white ceramic. 

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW389410) features a 41-millimetre case made from white zirconium oxide ceramic. This advanced material is lighter and harder than steel, scratch-proof, and has a smooth, velvety surface, making it an excellent choice for wristwatches. The white ceramic case beautifully contrasts with the deep blue dial, which has a sunburst finish and a distinctive colour gradient. The emblematic bold indices and numerals are printed in white. The hands in the subdials, as well as the hour and minute hands, are rhodium-plated and filled with Super-LumiNova^® to enhance legibility. The titanium case back is adorned with an engraving depicting the Little Prince. Additionally, the watch is equipped with the practical EasX-CHANGE^® strap change system, allowing the white rubber strap to be changed at the touch of a button. 
 

HIGH-PERFORMANCE CHRONOGRAPH MOVEMENT INSIDE 

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Le Petit Prince is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69381 calibre. Engineered with a focus on performance, reliability, and precision, this mechanical chronograph in a classic column-wheel design allows the wearer to accurately measure stop times of up to 12 hours. The hours and minutes are displayed in two totalisers at the 9 o’clock and 12 o’clock positions. According to the IWC-typical vertical dial layout, the stopped minutes are placed directly at 12 o’clock, enhancing readability. The movement features a bidirectional pawl-winding system, which reliably builds a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring.

Building on IWC’s extensive ceramic expertise, the Colors of TOP GUN collection comprises ceramic watches in different shades. Inspired by the world of naval aviation and developed in collaboration with Pantone^®, these colors include Mojave Desert, Lake Tahoe, Woodland, Oceana and Jet Black. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now presents a new color called TOP GUN Miramar. It is inspired by the light blue t-shirts that TOPGUN instructors wear under their flight suits. Having gone through a rigorous selection and intensive training process, they are considered some of the most skilled pilots and instructors. 

Limited to 1,000 pieces, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Miramar (Ref. IW389409) features a light blue ceramic case, complemented by a dial and a waterrepellent rubber strap in the same color. The blue hands are coated with Super-LumiNova^® to enhance legibility in low-light conditions. The process of manufacturing a colored ceramic watch is a remarkable feat of material engineering. Zirconium oxide is mixed with different metallic oxides in a precisely defined ratio. As the color changes during the sintering process, numerous trials are needed to achieve exactly the desired result. One specific challenge was transferring the new ceramic color to other components of the watch, such as the dial and the rubber strap. Each part is made of materials with unique properties and requires specific manufacturing processes.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 (Ref. IW388117) marks the first time IWC Schaffhausen introduces a Pantone^® color in a stainless steel watch. The chronograph features a 41-millimeter stainless steel case, combined with a TOP GUN Miramar blue dial and rubber strap. The rhodium-plated hands filled with Super-LumiNova^® enhance legibility. 

A HIGH-PRECISION CHRONOGRAPH MOVEMENT INSIDE 

Both chronographs are powered by movements from the IWC-manufactured 69000 caliber family. These chronograph movements have been engineered with a focus on robustness, reliability and precision. The column-wheel design ensures that the switching sequences are clearly defined, providing a distinct tactile feedback when the buttons are pushed. The efficient double-pawl winding system generates a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring. A signature feature is the IWC-typical vertical dial layout, which places the stopped minutes at 12 o’clock for easy and intuitive reading. The stainless steel version includes an open case back, offering a view of the movement, while the ceramic variant has a titanium case back engraved with the iconic “TOPGUN” logo. Additionally, it is equipped with a soft-iron inner case that protects the movement from magnetic fields.

Both models feature the IWC-developed EasX-CHANGE^® system. This innovative feature allows the wearer to easily remove the strap from the spring bar and replace it with another one by simply pressing a button integrated into the strap. As this system requires no tools, exchanging the strap or bracelet is quick and easy.

IWC Schaffhausen looks back on almost four decades of experience in manufacturing ceramic watch cases. In 2019, the brand introduced “Mojave Desert” as the first ceramic color in its “Colors of TOP GUN” collection. The color “Mojave Desert” is a discreet earth tone with notes of beige and khaki. This distinctive color is inspired by the flight suits of naval aviators and the desert landscape around China Lake, where the US Navy’s operates an air base for its most skilled pilots. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now adds a new “Mojave Desert” watch to its collection. 

The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert (Ref. IW328106) features a meticulously crafted sand-colored ceramic case with a diameter of 41 millimeters. Engineering ceramics undergo a complex manufacturing process. It begins with powdered raw materials, which are shaped into a pre-form known as “green body” and then machined closer to the final geometry. The next step involves sintering the case at high temperatures in a kiln. During this heat process, ceramic obtains properties like its extreme hardness and resistance to scratches. The distinctive “Mojave Desert” color is achieved by blending zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides in a precisely defined mixing ratio. As the color changes during the sintering process, countless trials are needed to achieve exactly the desired result.

The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert is characterized by its tone-in-tone design. Matching the ceramic case, the brown dial features a minute scale and numerals in a subdued tone, all coated with Super-LumiNova^® to ensure perfect legibility in low light conditions. The monochromatic design is complemented by a beige rubber strap with a textile inlay and a titanium pin buckle. Light and robust titanium is also used for the case back, which is engraved with the iconic “TOP GUN” logo.

The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32112 caliber. Its balance oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz, ensuring a precise rate. The movement is equipped with an automatic pawl winding system. It uses movements of the rotor in both directions to generate a power reserve of 120 hours. 

The new model joins the line-up of existing “Mojave Desert” watches, which includes the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” (Ref. IW503004), the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert (Ref. IW389402) and the Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” (Ref. IW506003).

IWC Schaffhausen has been collaborating with the heirs of Antoine de Saint Exupéry and the Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation since 2006. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now adds two new special editions dedicated to “The Little Prince” to its Pilot’s Watches collection, the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW504901) and the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW329501). 

TWO HIGH COMPLICATIONS IN ONE WATCH 

Limited to 100 pieces, the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Le Petit Prince is IWC’s first Le Petit Prince watch in ceramic. Reflecting the recurring blue colour element of these special editions in honour of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s novel, it features a 46.5-millimetre case crafted from blue ceramic, a blue dial and a blue textured rubber strap. These are combined with a case back ring and crown made of 18-carat 5N gold. The gold-plated appliques and hands are filled with Super-LumiNova^® to ensure perfect legibility. 

With a perpetual calendar and a flying minute tourbillon, this Big Pilot’s Watch combines two high complications. The flying minute tourbillon at 12 o’clock consists of 82 parts and weighs only 0.635 grams. Ranking among the most complex mechanisms in fine watchmaking, the tourbillon was initially conceived to counter the effects of gravity on the watch’s oscillating system, thereby increasing its accuracy. To achieve this, the pallet lever and the escape wheel are placed inside a small cage that rotates around its axis once every minute. Originally developed by legendary watchmaker Kurt Klaus during the 1980s, the perpetual calendar displays the calendar information on three subdials. The one at 3 o’clock combines the date with a power reserve indicator, while the one at the 6 o’clock position integrates both the month and the perpetual moon phase display. However, instead of showing the moon, the display depicts the Little Prince on his asteroid. Thanks to a reduction gear train with two intermediate wheels, it will only deviate by one day after 577.5 years. The subdial at 9 o’clock shows the day of the week. This version also features a four-digit year display. The calendar is mechanically programmed to recognise the different months’ lengths and automatically inserts a leap day every four years. As all its displays are synchronised, it can be advanced simply via the crown.

Both complications are powered by the IWC-manufactured 51950 calibre, a highly complex movement consisting of 447 parts. Crafted from solid gold and visible through the open case back, the rotor of the automatic winding system takes the shape of the Little Prince standing on his asteroid. Just like in Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s famous novel, asteroid B612 is covered with wild-growing baobab plants.

A PLATINUM WATCH WITH A FLYING MINUTE TOURBILLON 

Limited to 150 pieces, the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Le Petit Prince features a 43-milimetre case crafted from platinum, the rarest of all precious metal. Retaining its whitish shine and brilliance indefinitely, this material is highly resistant to corrosion and tarnishing. The platinum case and crown are combined with a deep blue dial with an intricate sunray finish, another standout feature of IWC’s special editions in honour of “The Little Prince”. The rhodium-plated hands and applied numerals are filled with Super-LumiNova^®, which ensures easy legibility. The watch is fitted with a brown calfskin strap with a platinum folding clasp. 

The flying minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock consists of 56 parts and weighs only 0.635 grams. As the mechanism rotates against a dark background, it appears to be floating in space. Thanks to the integrated tourbillon stop, the wearer can bring it to a complete halt by pulling out the crown and set the time with down-to-the-second accuracy. Components like the pallet lever and the escape wheel are treated with a special coating. Developed by IWC, this proprietary Diamond Shell^® technology reduces friction, improves the flow of energy in the movement and contributes to a generous power reserve of 80 hours. 

The Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Le Petit Prince is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82905 calibre with a Pellaton winding system. Developed by IWC’s former Technical Director Albert Pellaton in the 1950s, it uses movements of the rotor in both directions to wind the mainspring. Components that are subject to high stresses such as the automatic wheel are manufactured from virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. A special highlight is the rotor, which takes the shape of the Little Prince standing on his asteroid. This design detail is a charming reminder of Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s novel, which continues to entertain and inspire both children and adults.

The tourbillon is one of the most sophisticated complications in fine watchmaking. The balance wheel and pallet lever are placed inside a small cage that rotates around its axis once every minute. This constant rotation contributes to offsetting the effect of gravity on the oscillating system of the watch, thereby increasing its accuracy. Its complexity also makes the tourbillon a highly delicate and fragile mechanism. As dozens of parts have to work together in a confined space, it is particularly vulnerable to damage by shocks. With the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber Tourbillon Skeleton XPL (Ref. IW357701), IWC’s engineering division XPL has now pushed the boundaries in fine watchmaking again. Marking a first for the brand, this highly complex watch combines the patented SPRIN-g PROTECT^® shock absorber system with a tourbillon.

A BREAKTROUGH INNOVATION FROM IWC’S ENGINEERING DIVISION XPL 

IWC Schaffhausen’s advanced engineering division XPL develops new technologies to enhance the durability of mechanical watches and expand their range of applications to extreme environments. One area of research is movement shock protection. When a watch suffers an impact, the movement can potentially be subjected to high g-forces. If a watch case impacts a hard surface, for example, accelerations can range between 300 to 1000 g. Acceleration forces generated inside the movement can reach up to 1000 g. IWC Schaffhausen’s patented SPRIN-g PROTECT^® system uses a cantilever spring to cushion the movement and suspend it inside the case. In the event of an impact to the case, the movement is protected by the compressing spring system, reducing impact forces significantly. A unique crown coupling system allows the movement to move freely inside the case when the coupling is disengaged. 

RE-ENGINEERED SHOCK PROTECTION FOR THE TOURBILLON 

To adapt the SPRIN-g PROTECT^® shock absorber system to the IWC-manufactured 82915 calibre, the shape of the spring had to be redesigned. Each of the eight arms was recalculated using advanced simulation tools and adapted to the dimensions and weight of the tourbillon movement. The re-engineered shock absorber underwent comprehensive testing using advances measurement methods. During these tests, protected tourbillon movements have survived shocks in excess of 10,000 g.

AN ADVANCED BULK METALLIC GLASS WITH ELASTIC PROPERTIES 

The key to this extraordinary performance lies in the spring’s perfect form and material execution in bulk metallic glass (BMG). The spring is designed to evenly spread shock forces across its length and width. A highly complex manufacturing process gives BMG a disordered atomic-scale structure. This amorphous microstructure makes the material significantly more elastic than conventional metals – a key requirement for a shock absorber spring. Manufacturing this material, however, represents an enormous engineering challenge. The liquid metal must be cooled down extremely rapidly so that its structure remains amorphous and does not become crystalline. Otherwise, the metal loses its advantageous properties.

SKELETONISED MOVEMENT REDUCES THE MASS TO BE PROTECTED 

Reducing the mass to be protected is critical for the shock absorber system’s performance. For this reason, the plates, bridges and rotor of the IWC-manufactured 82915 calibre are skeletonised. The dial is reduced to a simple black ring with the characteristic triangle at 12 o’clock and minute scale. Even the triangular hands, coated with Super-LumiNova^®, are skeletonised. The f lying minute tourbillon, consisting of 56 parts and weighing only 0.663 grams, is visible at 6 o’clock. This approach allowed IWC’s engineers to reduce the weight of the movement as much as possible, maximising the performance of the shock absorber system. It also exposes the components and the BMG spring in a spectacular way. The movement features a Pellaton winding system reinforced with components made of ceramic. Using movements of the rotor in both directions, it efficiently builds up a power reserve of 80 hours in the mainspring.

CERATANIUM^® CASE AND CROWN 

The case and the crown of this watch are manufactured using Ceratanium^®, an innovative material that was developed by IWC and first presented in 2017. Ceratanium^® is based on a special titanium alloy. The components are milled from bars and then subsequently finished and fired in a kiln. During this heat process, they assume the properties of ceramic and also obtain their dark metallic finish. As a result, parts made of Ceratanium® are as light and unbreakable as titanium, while at the same time being similarly hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. The Ceratanium^® case features distinctive rubber bumpers on both sides. This highly complex and futuristic Big Pilot’s Watch is f itted with a black rubber strap with a technical pattern, complete with a Ceratanium^® pin buckle.

Since 2013, IWC Schaffhausen is the “Official Engineering Partner” of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team. In 2022, IWC released its first official team watch, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team” (Ref. IW388108) and in 2023, the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (Ref. IW388306).

The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (Ref. IW328210) features a 40-millimetre case crafted from lightweight and remarkably rigid grade 5 titanium. Offering the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metal, titanium is also used in automotive engineering to produce car parts subject to immense stress, such as engine valves. After machining and sandblasting, the surface retains an attractive greyish shimmer. Printed numerals and indices in the team’s signature Petronas green contrast the black dial. The hands for the hours, minutes and seconds are coated with Super-LumiNova^® of the same colour.

The case back is engraved with small hexagons as well as “Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team”. Inside the case is the IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre, an automatic movement with a power reserve of 120 hours. Water-resistant to 10 bar, this watch is fitted with a Petronas green rubber strap featuring the EasX-CHANGE^® strap change system. The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team will be worn trackside by team members including mechanics, engineers and race strategists during the 2025 season.

“The Little Prince” has been translated into more than 250 languages to date and is considered the most famous literary work by the French aviator and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The story describes the journey of the little prince to seven planets and their residents. As part of its collaboration with the heirs of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, IWC has since 2013 dedicated several Pilot’s Watches to this charming novel. Just as writing and flying were inextricably linked for Saint-Exupéry, these special editions with deep blue dials are a perfect symbiosis of poetry and engineering. 
 

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the “Le Petit Prince” editions, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now adds another special edition Big Pilot’s Watch to the collection. Limited to 300 pieces, the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW329502) features a case and crown made of 18-carat Armor Gold^®. This alloy is significantly harder and more wear-resistant than conventional 5N gold due to its improved microstructure. Contrasting with the 43-millimetre case is the deep blue dial with a radiant sunray finish. The gold-plated hands and appliques, filled with Super-LumiNova®, emit an enigmatic glow in the dark. The watch is fitted with a brown calfskin strap with an 18-carat Armor Gold^® folding clasp.

THE TOURBILLON COUNTERS THE EFFECTS OF GRAVITY 

The eye-catcher on the dial is the flying minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock. French for “whirlwind”, the tourbillon involves the balance wheel rotating around its axis in a small cage. This constant rotation not only provides a visual spectacle on the dial but also reduces the influence of gravity on the watch’s oscillating system, thereby increasing accuracy. Thanks to the integrated tourbillon stop, the mechanism can be brought to a complete stop and the watch set with down-to-the-second accuracy. The state-of-the-art tourbillon consists of 56 parts and weighs only 0.663 grams. The pallet lever and the escape wheel are treated with Diamond Shell^® technology, a special coating that reduces friction and improves the flow of energy in the movement. 

THE ROTOR TAKES THE SHAPE OF THE LITTLE PRINCE 

The Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Le Petit Prince is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82905 calibre movement. This high-end automatic calibre features a Pellaton winding system reinforced with ceramic components. Using movements of the rotor in both directions, it reliably builds up a power reserve of 80  hours in the mainspring. A special highlight is the rotor made of solid 18-carat gold, which takes the shape of “The Little Prince” standing on his asteroid. This beautiful detail and nod to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s charming novel can be admired through the transparent sapphire glass case back.

IWC Schaffhausen has an extensive legacy of manufacturing instrument watches. The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph  41 AMG (Ref. IW388305/04) features a case, crown and pushers crafted from robust and lightweight titanium. IWC pioneered this hard-to-machine metal in the watch industry in 1980 when it released the first wristwatch with a titanium case and bracelet. IWC had acquired the specific know-how for  machining  titanium  in close collaboration with French aerospace company Aérospatiale. Offering the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metal, titanium is frequently used in automotive engineering to manufacture components for high-performance engines. The grade 5 titanium alloy used for the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 case is around 45% lighter than steel and remarkably rigid. The case features a brushed finish with polished details on the horns. One version is fitted with a robust, waterproof black rubber strap (Ref. IW388305), while the other version (Ref. IW388304) features a titanium bracelet with H-links and an integrated folding clasp.
 

Last year, IWC introduced the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team”. The official team watch is worn by the team, including designers, aerodynamicists, race engineers, strategists and mechanics. Now, IWC is also launching a  performance chronograph dedicated to  its  partner.
 

The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (Ref. IW388306) features a case made of Ceratanium^®. Developed by IWC, this material combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch-resistance similar to ceramic. The lightweight material is based on a special titanium alloy forged to IWC’s specifications. The case components are machined from bars using computer-controlled turning and milling centres. Afterward, they are elaborately finished by hand and fired in a kiln at high temperatures. During this firing process, a phase transformation occurs, and the material’s surface obtains properties similar to ceramic and its striking matte black finish. This watch is fitted with a black rubber strap with a Ceratanium^® pin buckle.

A TACHYMETER SCALE  ADDS THE DIMENSION OF SPEED

An outstanding functional feature of the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 is the ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale, which allows the wearer to measure the average speed in relation to the distance travelled. Pushing the chronograph’s start button initiates a measurement. Once a distance of one kilometre has been covered, the chronograph is stopped. The central chronograph seconds hand will point to a number on the rotating tachymeter scale, corresponding to the average speed in kilometres per hour.

A MASTERPIECE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP AND FINISHING

Matching the polished black ceramic bezels, all models feature black dials with a glossy finish and  black  hands. The recessed totalisers and the applied indices and numerals, in blackened nickel, filled with Super-LumiNova^®, provide additional depth and ensure excellent night-time readability. The manufacturing of this intricate dial represents a feat of craftsmanship and finishing. The polished black lacquer finish is the result of an elaborate, highly controlled and perfected production process.  The three totalisers are individually finished and printed before they are mounted on the lacquered base plate to create the final dial. The approximately 20 appliques are individually polished by hand, fixed to the dial and then filled with luminous material.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE CHRONOGRAPH ENGINE

All versions of the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre movement. Comprising 242 parts, this mechanical chronograph movement has been engineered with an uncompromising focus on robustness, reliability, and precision. Its bi-directional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring. Column-wheel control of the chronograph ensures that individual phases in the switching sequence are clearly defined. There is also a distinct tactile resistance when the buttons are pushed. The chronographs features IWC’s characteristic vertical subdial arrangement. The stopped minutes are displayed directly at the 12 o’clock position, enhancing readability. The assembly of these movements at IWC’s Manufakturzentrum is organized in a dedicated line. Dividing the process into several smaller steps is paramount for achieving the best possible quality. After assembly and regulation, all movement functions are tested automatically over 12 days in the FIM (Final Inspection Movement) cell developed by IWC.
 

In addition, all three timepieces are eligible for registration under the My IWC care program and can benefit from a 6-year extension to the standard 2-year International Limited Warranty.

Now, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer is adding two new models to the collection.
 

The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland (Ref. IW395601) features a case made of Woodland green ceramic. The dark green hue is inspired by the flight suits and uniforms worn by pilots in the TOPGUN flight school and the vast forest landscapes they fly over. The timepiece impresses with its monochromatic design. From the dial and hands to the rubber strap and luminescent material, each component was carefully matched to the ceramic case color through an elaborate engineering process. The case ring and the crown are made of matte black Ceratanium®, an IWC-developed material which combines the structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch-resistance similar to that of ceramic. 
 

Thanks to the integrated Timezoner^® function, the watch can be set to a different time zone by simply pressing down and rotating the bezel. The hour hand, the 24-hour display and the date will move forwards or backwards in one-hour steps. This adjustment also works across the dateline and without losing a single second in the process. The city ring is made of green ceramic, while its outer bezel is made of Ceratanium^®. It contains the names of 24 major cities, each representing one of the international time zones. The timepiece is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82760 caliber. This automatic movement uses a Pellaton winding system reinforced with ceramic components to reliably build up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring. The movement is visible through a tinted sapphire case back. 
 

With the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert (Ref. IW389402), IWC adds its third 41-millimeter ceramic chronograph to the portfolio. The case is made of sand-colored ceramic. Known as Mojave Desert, this earth tone with notes of beige and khaki is inspired by the flight suits of naval aviators and the desert landscape around China Lake, home to the U.S. Navy’s famous TOPGUN flight school. The dark brown dial and the hands, the printing and luminescent material, and the rubber strap with a textile inlay harmonize perfectly with the case. The crown, the chronograph pushers, and the case back are made of matte grey titanium. Ticking away inside the case is the IWC-manufactured 69380 caliber. This highly robust chronograph movement in a classic column-wheel design comprises 242 individual parts. The IWC-typical vertical dial layout places the stopped minutes directly at the 12 o’clock position, significantly enhancing readability. An efficient double pawl winding system uses movements of the rotor in both directions to build up a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring. The movement is protected from the effects of magnetic fields by a soft iron inner case, and the front glass is specially secured to withstand sudden drops in air pressure. 

IWC PIONEERED CERAMIC IN THE WATCH INDUSTRY 

IWC is a pioneer in the use of ceramic for watch cases. In 1986, the company introduced the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (Ref. 3755). It was the world’s first wristwatch with a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic. IWC was also one of the first watch brands to push forward the development of different ceramic colors, such as white, blue, and green. To manufacture a watch case in colored ceramic, zirconium oxide is combined with other metallic oxides. The final color results from the exact mixing ratio of these raw materials. What is more, the manufacturing process and its parameters – such as the exact temperature or the duration of the sintering process – must be adapted to each color.

Probably no other timepiece from IWC Schaffhausen’s Pilot’s Watches collection has achieved such a cult status among collectors as the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Markus Bühler from 2008. It was inspired by a unique piece Markus Bühler had created for a competition in the final year of his watchmaker apprenticeship at IWC. Its most striking visual feature was the aircraft turbine on the small seconds. Fifteen years later, IWC presents an exclusive new interpretation. Like its predecessor, the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Markus Bühler (Ref. IW329901) features a small turbine on the dial. However, the characteristic aircraft engine has been integrated into a flying minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock this time. 
 

“When I created my Big Pilot’s Watch with a turbine as an apprentice watchmaker, I would never have imagined I would lead the development of a second edition 15  years later – let alone that I would be responsible for all assembly processes at IWC. To meet the high expectations of our collectors, we decided to create something truly exclusive and integrate the signature turbine into a tourbillon. This new edition perfectly embodies IWC’s engineering spirit while showcasing highest levels of detail and craftsmanship”, explains Markus Bühler, Associate Director of Watch and Movement Assembly at IWC Schaffhausen.

SMALL TURBINE, BIG CHALLENGE 

In a tourbillon, the balance and escapement are housed in a small cage that rotates around its axis once per minute. The higher its mass and inertia, the more energy it takes to keep the mechanism in motion. Weight reduction is, therefore, the primary focus in any tourbillon construction. For this reason, the turbine was machined from a lightweight titanium alloy. Due to the complex geometry and the small dimensions, the milling process alone took several hours. After machining, each of the twelve minuscule blades was polished by hand and finished to an incredibly high level of detail and aesthetic perfection. To avoid the turbine adding additional weight to the mechanism, Bühler used it as the upper part of the tourbillon cage, replacing the regulator. As a result, the eye-catcher on the dial also has a technical function: the hairspring attaches to the underside of one of its blades, and the watchmaker can adjust the zero crossing of the balance by turning the turbine. The state-of-the-art tourbillon consists of 56 parts and weighs only 0.663 grams. The pallet lever and the escape wheel were treated with Diamond Shell® technology, a special coating that reduces friction and improves the energy flow in the movement.

PRECIOUS PLATINUM CASE AND DETAILED FINISHING 

The 43-millimetre case and the crown are crafted from platinum. Platinum is amongst the rarest, purest and most precious metal used for watches and jewellery. The case has been elaborately finished by hand with polished surfaces around the bezel and the horns. Thanks to this finishing, the whitish shimmer of the platinum is accentuated beautifully, giving the timepiece a refined, sophisticated appearance. The black lacquered, glossy dial has been imprinted with white numerals and features applied indices filled with Super-LumiNova^®. A black Cordovan leather strap with Markus Bühler’s signature printed on the inner side complements the design. Powering this Big Pilot’s Watch 43 is the IWC-manufactured 82905 calibre. Its Pellaton winding system has been reinforced with ceramic components and builds up a power reserve of 80 hours in the mainspring. The plates, bridges and the rotor, visible through the sapphire case back, were blackened with a PVD coating, then laser-engraved and finally rhodium-plated in the engraved areas.

FROM APPRENTICE WATCHMAKER TO ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR 

The story of the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Markus Bühler and its re-edition is also a testament to the strength of IWC’s apprentice programme. The first edition from 2008 was initially created as an entry for a competition organised by the “Institut de Formation à la Haute Horlogerie,” in which Markus Bühler won first prize. To this day, apprentices’ competitions and events like innovation challenges are a fundamental pillar of IWC’s strategy to foster the development of young talent, create new ideas and engineer cutting-edge watchmaking solutions. After finishing his apprenticeship as a watchmaker, Bühler remained loyal to IWC. Among other positions, he has been Department Manager of Industrialization and Head of Movement Assembly & Industrialization. Since 2020, he has been responsible for the entire spectrum of IWC’s assembly processes at the new Manufakturzentrum as Associate Director of Watch & Movement Assembly.

The Big Pilot’s Watch from IWC Schaffhausen and the G-Class from Mercedes-Benz share a similar history and are deeply rooted in a utilitarian legacy. Both were initially developed to meet purely functional criteria – one to be easy to read and highly robust, the other to offer uncompromising offroad capabilities. Over the years, they have retained their utilitarian beginnings and evolved into modern design icons at the same time. After nearly 20 years of partnership with Mercedes-AMG, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now celebrates these icons with two striking special editions of the Big Pilot’s Watch.

The Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 (Ref. IW501201) boasts a case and crown made of 18-carat Armor Gold^®, a black dial and a black rubber strap with microfibre inlay. The black and gold colour code is inspired by the exterior paintwork and interior finishing of the recently launched Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Grand Edition”. Armor Gold^® is an innovative alloy that elevates the hardness values of gold to a whole new level and makes this comparatively soft, precious metal much more resistant to external influences. Thanks to an improved microstructure, this special alloy is significantly harder and more wear-resistant than conventional 5N gold. The combination of sand-blasted surfaces and polished edges lends this Big Pilot’s Watch a classy, contemporary character.

The Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 (Ref. IW506201) is the first IWC timepiece to feature a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) case, engineered in close collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Unlike conventional carbon fibre-reinforced polymers, the fibres of this composite material are embedded in a matrix of ceramic rather than polymer. Therefore, CMC components are extremely damage-tolerant. Because they are also insensitive to thermal shocks, they are the material of choice for applications with extremely high requirements in terms of lightness, strength, and temperature resistance – from aerospace to the manufacturing of brake discs for sports and luxury cars.

A HIGHLY COMPLEX MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The starting point for manufacturing a CMC watch case is a conventional carbon-fibre reinforced polymer. In a heat treatment called pyrolysis, lasting several days, the polymer matrix is converted to carbon, leaving behind a dense weave of fibres embedded in a porous carbon matrix. Subsequently, silicon crystals are placed on top of the component, and everything is heated in an oven. During this so-called siliconisation, silicon is pulled into the cavities and chemically reacts with the carbon, forming a new matrix made of silicon carbide ceramic. After finishing with diamond tools, the CMC cases exhibit a matte black colour and a unique structure determined by the fibres, making each piece truly unique.

REVISITING SIGNATURE G-CLASS DESIGN CUES 

In addition to the Big Pilot’s characteristic power reserve display at 3 o’clock, both new editions feature a small second counter at 9 o’clock. The opposing subdials with external white rings imitate the typical headlights on the front side of the G-Class. The black dials are embossed with a relief-like technical structure inspired by the air intakes of Mercedes-AMG performance cars. Unlike the classic Big Pilot’s Watch, which has printed numerals and indices, these special editions feature appliques that have been PVD-coated in black and filled with luminous material.

HIGH-END IWC-MANUFACTURED MOVEMENT INSIDE 

Both versions of the Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 are powered by the IWC-manufactured 52010 calibre, a highly robust and precise automatic movement. Parts of the winding system that are subject to particularly high stress are manufactured from virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. Developed by IWC’s former Technical Director Albert Pellaton during the 1940s, the ingenious self-winding mechanism uses even the smallest movements of the rotor in both directions to build up a power reserve of seven days in two barrels..The movements are visible through tinted sapphire glass back, which feature a Mercedes-Benz star and are reminiscent of the spare wheel cover on the backside of the G-Class.

The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 Black Aces (Ref. IW326905) takes inspiration from a pilot’s watch that IWC engineered for members of Strike Fighter Squadron 41 (VFA-41), also known as the “Black Aces”. The squadron is based at Naval Air Station Lemoore in California. Originally formed in 1950 at NAS Oceana, VFA-41 is attached to Carrier Air Wing 9 and uses the radio callsign “Fast Eagle”. 
 

A DIAL CAPABLE OF STORING LIGHT ENERGY 

The most striking feature of this timepiece is the fully luminous white Lumicast dial. Developed in collaboration with pilots from the “Black Aces”, the dial is the result of a complex manufacturing process. In the first step, high-grade Super-LumiNova^® pigments are mixed with a binder, cast into a circular mold, and hardened in a specially developed curing process to give the material a ceramic-like durability. The resulting solid disc is then fixed onto the soft-iron dial blank. Finally, the dial is imprinted with black indices and numerals and the “Black Aces” patch, resembling the ace of spades from a card deck. In dark chamber tests, the dial emitted a bright greenish light for more than 23 hours, taking legibility and night visibility to a whole new level. 

Super-LumiNova^® is a high-tech ceramic compound that behaves like a light storage battery. Light energy absorbed from sunlight or artificial light causes the electrons in the material to enter a higher energy state, where this energy is stored. When the electrons return to their normal state, they emit the absorbed energy as visible light, making the material glow in the dark. The process of absorbing and releasing light energy can be repeated an infinite number of times without ever causing the material to age or diminishing its light storage capacity.
 

HARD AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT CERAMIC CASE 

The case of the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 Black Aces is made of black zirconium oxide ceramic, a material IWC pioneered in the watch industry as early as the 1980s. With a Vickers rating second only to that of diamonds, ceramic ranks among the hardest substances on Earth. Its lightness, hardness and scratch resistance make it the perfect case material for everyday use in the restricted space of a jet cockpit. Moreover, its stealthy matte-black color ensures pilots are not distracted by sunlight reflected from their watch. The case back is made of lightweight titanium and features an engraving of the “Black Aces” twin-engine jet against a backdrop of spades. The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 Black Aces is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32100 caliber. Combined with the soft-iron inner case, the movement’s anti-magnetic silicon escapement further improves the watch’s resistance to magnetic fields. The efficient double pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 72 hours in the mainspring. The watch is fitted with a black textile strap with a pin buckle in sand-blasted stainless steel.

In 2022, IWC unveiled its “Colors of TOP GUN” collection comprising various Pilot’s Watches in striking new ceramic colors. With the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Lake Tahoe (Ref. IW503008), the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now adds another model in white ceramic to the line-up. The ceramic color, which IWC and Pantone have specified as “IWC Lake Tahoe”, is inspired by white uniforms and the winter landscape around freshwater Lake Tahoe. Located between California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a mountainous area that the pilots of the nearby TOPGUN flight school frequently fly over. The eye-catching design is completed with a pitch-black dial and black hands with white Super-LumiNova^®, a stainless steel crown and case back ring, and a white textured rubber strap.

EXTENSIVE MATERIALS EXPERTISE

White ceramics are emblematic of IWC’s comprehensive expertise in advanced performance materials. The company experimented with this color as early as the 1980s, shortly after introducing its first wristwatch with a black zirconium oxide ceramic case. White ceramic is created in a complex manufacturing process in which zirconium oxide is mixed with other metallic oxides and sintered at high temperatures in an oven. Ceramic is extremely scratch-resistant and remarkably light, making it the perfect material for a Pilot’s Watch.

A HIGHLY ENGINEERED COMPLICATION 

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Lake Tahoe features the legendary perpetual calendar complication. It was developed in the 1980s by Kurt Klaus and since then, it has been steadily improved several times in terms of mechanics and functionality. The intricate mechanical program automatically recognizes the different lengths of the months and leap years and will require no manual adjustment until 2100. The patented double moon phase display shows the moon as seen from the northern and southern hemispheres. Thanks to a special reductionist gear train, it is so precise that it will only deviate by one day after 577.5 years. The calendar module is driven via a single nightly switching impulse by the IWC-manufactured 52615 caliber movement with a Pellaton winding system and a power reserve of 7 days. The movement can be admired through a transparent sapphire glass back.

Over 70 years ago, IWC Schaffhausen stood at the forefront of an unprecedented success story when it engineered the Mark 11 for the British Royal Air Force (RAF). This instrument watch for pilots and navigators was not only the start of the legendary Mark series, it also set the benchmark for the technical features and functional instrument design of most modern pilot’s watches. In 2022, IWC introduced the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX as the latest addition to the series. After presenting the model with blue, green and black dials, IWC is now completing the line-up with two silver-plated dial versions. One is fitted with a black calfskin strap (Ref. IW328207), and the other features a high-grade 5-link stainless steel bracelet (Ref. IW328208).
 

The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX features a 40-millimetre stainless steel case, thoroughly re-engineered with a revised side profile and an improved lug geometry. The slimmer and more curved lugs provide an even better fit on all wrists. The graphics for the numerals and indices on the high-contrast dial have been refined to the smallest detail. Luminescent elements on the dial and the black hands ensure perfect readability in all lighting conditions. The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre. The automatic movement features a silicon escapement and a double pawl winding system, building up a five-day power reserve. The front glass is specially secured to remain in place even in the event of a sudden pressure drop in the cockpit.
 

Another practical feature is the integrated EasX-CHANGE® system, which lets the wearer change the strap or bracelet quickly and easily without any tools. A wide variety of straps and bracelets are available as accessories, allowing the wearer to customise their timepiece to their liking. A SUCCESS STORY THAT BEGAN 75 YEARS AGO

In the early days of aviation, pilots relied on astronomical navigation to determine their position in the sky. Relying on celestial bodies such as the sun or the moon to determine latitude and longitude, this procedure requires a sextant and a chronometer – a highly precise watch to measure the elapsed time. However, existing navigation watches back then were prone to numerous problems. Particularly challenging were the radar screens used during the approach phase as they generated strong magnetic fields, which could harm the accuracy of the watches. These issues made the RAF request the development of an entirely new navigation watch.

SETTING THE BENCHMARK FOR MODERN PILOT’S WATCHES

Following the RAF’s request, IWC Schaffhausen developed the Mark 11. Officially designated as the “navigator’s wristwatch Mk. 11 – Stores Ref. 6B/346”, it was delivered to them in 1948. Its 89 calibre was housed in a soft-iron inner case to protect it from magnetic fields. Another essential requirement was perfect legibility. The Mark 11, therefore, featured a high-contrast dial with luminescence, which made it easy to read the time whenever visibility was limited. This functional design in the style of an easy-to-read cockpit instrument remains a signature feature of IWC Pilot’s Watches. During the following decades, the Mark 11 was continuously upgraded and refined. Even as interference-free radio beacons made astronomical navigation obsolete, the Mark 11 remained a critical “backup instrument” for pilots in various Commonwealth countries well into the 1980s.

Introduced at the first Miami Grand Prix™ a year ago, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team is crafted from remarkably rigid grade 5 titanium. IWC pioneered this material in the watch industry during the 1980s, when the company introduced the first wristwatch with a titanium case and bracelet. Offering the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metal, titanium is about 45 percent lighter than steel. It is also widely used in automotive engineering to manufacture components subject to extreme stains, such as engine valves. In addition, titanium impresses with its corrosion-resistance and skin-friendliness. A black dial with printing and luminescence in the team’s signature PETRONAS green complements the striking design. The chronograph is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre movement. This robust chronograph movement in a column-wheel design comprises 242 parts and can be viewed through the sapphire glass back. Its bi-directional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46  hours in the mainspring. 

The existing version of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (Ref. IW388108) on a green rubber strap comes in a bundle with a black calfskin strap and will continue to be available online. The new reference on the Miami Pink rubber strap (Ref. IW388114) comes in a bundle with the green strap and can only be purchased online on IWC.com and in the Miami boutique for a limited time. Thanks to the integrated EasX-CHANGE® system, the straps can be exchanged quickly and easily, without needing additional tools.

With “The Colors of TOP GUN,” IWC introduced a collection of Pilot’s Watches in colored ceramic in 2022. It consisted of chronographs in striking new shades, such as IWC Lake Tahoe white and IWC Woodland green, developed in collaboration with Pantone®. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer now adds two chronographs in a compact and easy-to-wear case diameter of 41 millimetres to the line-up. This marks the first time IWC offers the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 in a case made of ceramic – an extremely hard and scratch-resistant performance material.
 

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN “Oceana” (Ref. 389404) features a case made of blue ceramic. The ceramic color “Oceana” was created with Pantone®, an IWC partner and a global authority on color. The color takes inspiration from the U.S. Navy’s blue overalls, a work uniform worn by their pilots when carrying out arduous tasks aboard aircraft carriers. In addition, the chronograph features a blue dial and a matching blue rubber strap with a denim finish textile inlay. Luminescence on the black hands and on the dial ensures excellent readability, even at night. The pushers and the case back are made of lightweight titanium.
 

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN (Ref. 389401) is IWC’s first 41-millimetre Pilot’s Chronograph in black ceramic. Its “Jet Black” ceramic, inspired by the technical components of supersonic jets, has been the signature material of IWC TOP GUN since the line was established in 2007. A black dial and a black rubber strap complement the pitch-black ceramic case. Here, too, contrasting luminescent elements on the black hands and the dial enhance readability, even in the most challenging conditions. The titanium pushers and case back complement the sporty design. The integrated IWC EasX-CHANGE® system makes it possible to exchange the strap quickly and easily without needing additional tools.

UNCOMPROMISING PERFORMANCE AND READABILITY 
Both chronographs are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69380 calibre. This calibre family has been engineered with a strict focus on robustness, reliability, and durability. The stopped minutes are placed directly at 12 o’clock to enhance readability. The vertical dial layout is the result of IWC’s functional design approach and has become a distinguishing feature of the company’s chronographs. Both new models also feature a soft-iron inner case to protect their movements from the effects of magnetic fields. The front glasses are specially secured to withstand sudden drops in air pressure in the cockpit. Moreover, both timepieces are water resistant to 10 bar.
 

A PIONEER IN THE USE OF CERAMIC 
IWC Schaffhausen is a pioneer in the use of ceramic for watch cases. In 1986, the company introduced the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (Ref. 3755), the world’s first wristwatch with a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic. IWC was also one of the first watch brands to push forward the development of different ceramic colors, such as white, blue, or green. Producing a watch case in colored ceramic is a feat of engineering. Zirconium oxide is combined with other metallic oxides to give the ceramic its color. As a result, each color requires different raw materials and a distinct mixing ratio. The manufacturing process and its specific parameters – such as the temperature and the exact duration of the sintering process – must be adapted to each particular ceramic color. What is more, colored ceramics also place incredibly high demands on the purity of their raw materials.

In 2021, IWC Schaffhausen introduced the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41. With a case diameter of 41 and a lug-to-lug distance of 51.8 mm, this chronograph offers excellent wearability even on slender wrists. Other key characteristics such as the 10 bar water-resistant case and the integrated EasX-CHANGE® quick change system make this reference a fully versatile sports watch. 

The dial features the iconic design in the style of an easyto- read cockpit instrument design that has become the hallmark of IWC’s Pilot’s Watches. The stopped minutes are displayed at 12 o’clock and the minutes at 9 o’clock. In addition, the chronograph also features a day and date aperture at 3 o’clock and a small seconds display at 6 o’clock.

After initially launching the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 with blue and green dials, IWC is now extending the collection with two new versions which feature black dials. The first one (Ref. IW388111) is fitted with a black calfskin strap whereas the second one (Ref. IW388113) features a sophisticated 5-link stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp. The bracelet is beautifully finished and extremely comfortable to wear on the wrist. 

Both new models are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre movement. This mechanical chronograph movement in a classic column-wheel design consists of 231 individual parts and is visible through the sapphire glass case back. The bi-directional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring. 

The new versions of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 are available immediately on IWC.com, from IWC boutiques and through selected retail partners. In addition, the timepieces are eligible for registration under the My IWC care program and can benefit from a 6-year extension to the standard 2-year International Limited Warranty.

The collaboration between IWC Schaffhausen and Faction brings together two Swiss companies with a proven track record and a high competence in engineering. Both have also acquired unique expertise in advanced performance materials and commit to the highest standards regarding sustainability and responsible production. Faction was founded in 2006 by a group of passionate skiers. Limited to 55 pairs, the “Faction Studio 1 IWC Collab Ltd.” is handmade in Austria in a 100% renewable energy factory. Its wooden core is composed of sustainably harvested poplar and ash. The skis are engineered to the same specifications used by Faction for Eileen Gu’s skis, meaning they can withstand the extreme forces generated by the world’s very best free skiers. A carbon-rubber reinforcement under the binding area adds stability for heavy landings. The carbon weave ensures torsional strength, while the symmetrical shape is optimised for effortless switch skiing. An extra-large 7.5 mm sidewall provides maximum edge hold and protection for the ski’s wooden core.

The skis feature a tone-on-tone white top sheet and a black base, perfectly matching the design of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” with its crisp white ceramic case and pitch-black dial. “FACTION” and their logo is printed in white on the black base. The white top sheet features the IWC and “Lake Tahoe” logos in luminescent paint. While barely visible during the day, they will glow green in the dark. This project marks the first time that Faction has engineered skis featuring a luminescent design.

Every pair of the “Faction Studio 1 IWC Collab Ltd.” skis come with an option to purchase the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” (Ref. IW389105). Launched at the Watches and Wonders exhibition in Geneva in April, the chronograph is a highlight of IWC’s TOP GUN collection. It features a case made of crisp white ceramic, a pitch-black dial, black hands coated with luminescent materials, and a titanium case back. The contrasting design is inspired by the winter landscape around Lake Tahoe, a mountainous area frequently flown over by the pilots in the U.S. Navy’s TOPGUN school. Colored ceramics are created in a complex manufacturing process in which zirconium oxide is mixed with other metallic oxides and then sintered at high temperatures in a kiln. It takes a lot of experience and know-how to determine the right mixture of raw materials and achieve consistent results across the multi-stage manufacturing process.

The “Faction Studio 1 IWC Collab Ltd.” skis are available in a limited edition of 55 pairs in two sizes (25 x 171 cm or 30 x 178 cm) on https://factionskis.com/products/studio-1-iwc-collab-ski-2023. The fascination with Pilot’s watches is rooted in their functional, purist design in the style of an easy-toread cockpit instrument. Moreover, the unique history of these timepieces continues to inspire people today. IWC’s Pilot’s watches were initially conceived as precision instruments for celestial navigation. Pilots used them with a sextant to determine their position during visual flights. Hardly any other model embodies this history like the Mark from IWC. The latest addition to the series is the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX. It continues the lineage started by the Mark 11, a precise and antimagnetic instrument watch IWC developed in 1948 for pilots and navigators of the British Royal Air Force and which remained in service well until the 1980s.

The Pilot’s Watch Mark XX ( Ref. I W3282) features a robust and corrosion-resistant stainless steel case with a diameter of 40 millimetres and improved lug ergonomics. The high-contrast dial with white numerals and indices displays the triangular index at 12 o’clock, which has become a signature design detail of IWC’s Pilot’s watches. Luminous elements on the dial and the rhodium-plated hands ensure great readability in all lighting conditions.

The new reference is equipped with the IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre. This newly engineered automatic movement uses a bidirectional pawl winding system to build up a power reserve of 120 hours. In addition, the front glass of the watch is specially secured against sudden drops in air pressure. Another practical feature is IWC’s EasX-CHANGE® quick-change system*, which allows to change the strap or bracelet easily without needing additional tools. Furthermore, the Mark XX is now certified as water-resistant to 10 bars, making it the perfect companion for any adventure.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition «Woodland» (Ref. IW389106) was launched as a part of IWC’s “The Colors of TOP GUN” collection at Watches and Wonders 2022 in Geneva. It is the first IWC timepiece in newly engineered green ceramic – a color IWC and PANTONE® have specified as “IWC Woodland”. This shade of green is used for the ceramic case and the dial, while the numerals and hour markers are printed in a lighter hue. Colored ceramics are created in a complex manufacturing process, in which zirconium oxide is mixed with other metallic oxides and then sintered at high temperatures in a kiln. The pushers and case back are made of matte black Ceratanium®. Developed by IWC, this material is as light and robust as titanium and almost as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. The timepiece is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69380 calibre, a robust and reliable chronograph with a column-wheel design.

The in-store launch of the “Low Top Ghost Woodland” is celebrated with a release party on 23rd September at the Filling Pieces flagship store at Spuistraat 168A in 1012 VT Amsterdam. From 23rd September, the shoe will be available online on fillingpieces.com. Only 100 pairs in sizes ranging from 39 to 46 will be available. Filling Pieces is a streetwear-inspired luxury brand based in the heart of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. As previously announced during a signature talk at Watches and Wonders in Geneva, IWC Schaffhausen lends its support to the Polaris Dawn mission, the first of three human spaceflights planned as part of the Polaris Program, led by Jared Isaacman, the U.S entrepreneur and mission commander of last year’s Inspiration4 mission.

The Polaris Dawn mission, targeted to launch no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2022, will conduct science and research designed to advance human health on Earth and our understanding of human health during future long-duration space flights. Over the course of five days, Dragon and the Polaris Dawn crew will endeavour to travel to 1,400 kilometres – the highest Earth orbit ever flown – and attempt the first-ever commercial spacewalk.

In addition to conducting research in space, Polaris Dawn will raise funds and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, a leading children’s hospital treating the most challenging childhood cancers and paediatric diseases. To support this goal, IWC has designed and donated four space-themed chronographs. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Polaris Dawn” (Ref. IW389111) features a 44.5-millimetre case made of white ceramic. The bright white colour results from a complex manufacturing process in which zirconium oxide is mixed with other metallic oxides in a precisely defined ratio and then sintered at high temperatures in a kiln. The chronographs feature dark blue lacquered dials printed with countless stars and the mission logo. In addition, the titanium case backs are engraved with the name of one of the four crew members. Alongside Jared Isaacman, who will serve as commander, the crew consists of retired United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Scott “Kidd” Poteet and SpaceX Lead Space Operations Engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon.

The Polaris Dawn mission will launch from the historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After spending approximately five days in orbit, the spacecraft will return to Earth, and the four chronographs will be auctioned. Raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® previously marked a cornerstone of last year’s Inspiration4 mission. Four IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Editions raised $405,000, with the overall auction results and donations reaching more than $240 million.

POLARIS DAWN

The Polaris Program is a first-of-its-kind effort to further humanity’s exploration of space and to help solve the most challenging issues on Earth. The program will consist of up to three human spaceflight missions. During his time as the Team Principal & CEO, the team has won eight consecutive constructors’ titles between 2014 and 2021 – more than any other team in elite world sport. With the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team”, Wolff was finally honoured with an IWC watch that carries his name.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team” (Ref. IW503607) features a Ceratanium® case and crown, a glass dial, and black hands. The printing and luminescence are in the team’s signature PETRONAS green colour. Limited to only 100 pieces, this watch is fitted with a black rubber strap with textile inlay. Ceratanium® is a ground-breaking new material developed by IWC. It is as light and robust as titanium and almost as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. Ceratanium® is based on a special titanium alloy forged explicitly for IWC. The case components are machined from bars and then treated in a furnace process at high temperatures. During this heat treatment, they develop not only ceramic properties on their surface but also their striking matte black finish.

IWC’s legendary perpetual calendar was developed by former head-watchmaker Kurt Klaus during the 1980s. The mechanical program automatically recognises the different lengths of the months and the leap years, requiring no manual adjustment until 2100. The moon phase display shows the moon as seen from the northern and southern hemispheres and will only deviate by one day after 577.5 years. The calendar module is driven via a single nightly switching impulse by the IWC-manufactured 52615 calibre. This automatic movement features IWC’s iconic Pellaton winding system, which has been reinforced with ceramic components and accumulates a power reserve of 7 days in two barrels. The movement can be admired through the tinted sapphire glass back.

2022 is a year of colour for IWC Schaffhausen. In April, the Swiss luxury watch manufacture launched its “Colors of TOP GUN” collection with chronographs in striking green and white ceramic. Now, IWC reveals the new Big Pilot’s Watch 43 (Ref. IW329306). This Big Pilot’s Watch impresses with a green dial and a matching rubber strap. The unique shade of green is inspired by the “racing green” hue used to paint British racing cars since 1903. Rhodium-plated hands with luminescence make the dial easier to read at night. Since the birth of Formula 1™, engineers have been dreaming of bringing the supreme technology from the elite class of motor racing to the streets. After a long engineering journey, Mercedes-AMG is about to make this dream come true. The German performance and sports car manufacturer will soon initiate the production of the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar. The two-seater will transfer the latest and most efficient Formula 1™ hybrid technology almost one to one from the racetrack to the street for the first time. The performance hybrid will produce over 1,000 horsepower at a maximum speed of over 350 km/h.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “AMG ONE OWNERS” (Ref. 590502) features IWC’s patented constant-force mechanism. This complication disengages the escapement from the direct flow of power through the wheel train and transmits completely even impulses of energy to the escape wheel. As a result, even as the torque in the mainspring diminishes, the balance wheel oscillates with virtually the same amplitude. In combination with the tourbillon, which compensates for the negative influences of gravity, this ensures a highly exact rate. The IWC-manufactured 94800 calibre is manually wound and stores a power reserve of 96 hours in its twin barrels. The fully blackened movement is visible through the sapphire glass back. The case back is made of Ceratanium®. TITANIUM ALUMINIDE REFLECTS IWC’S UNIQUE TITANIUM LEGACY

The Big Pilot’s Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “AMG ONE OWNERS” reflects the unique competence IWC acquired in machining titanium since the 1980s. The case is made of titanium aluminide (TiAl). TiAl is lighter and harder than conventional titanium, highly resistant to corrosion, and biocompatible. This high-tech material belongs to the group of intermetallic compounds. Due to the specific mixing ratio of titanium and aluminium, atoms and electrons arrange themselves in a particular way. This causes the material to have certain nonmetallic properties in addition to the classic properties of a metal. In the case of TiAl, it is its high temperature resistance that stands out. For this reason, the material is used for the turbine blades of modern jet engines, where lightness and temperature resistance are essential requirements. Its specific properties also make it the ideal choice for components of high-performance engines in motorsport. 

Because titanium aluminide has a difficult machining behaviour, manufacturing a TiAl watch case is a real engineering feat. In addition, the requirements for the purity of the raw materials are very high, and the production of the titanium aluminide alloy is costly and complex. Today, IWC is one of the few watch manufacturer capable of producing a titanium aluminide case. A DESIGN INSPIRED BY THE MERCEDES-AMG ONE 

In addition to the constant-force tourbillon at 9 o’clock,the black dial also features a double moon phase display for the northern and southern hemispheres and a power reserve display at 4 o’clock, reminiscent of a tachometer. The louvred, ring-shaped structure of the outer dial ring takes inspiration from the air inlets that dominate the front of the Mercedes-AMG ONE. The design also features details in Petronas green – the signature colour of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ team, whose plug-in hybrid technology the new car brings to the street. A thin ring in Petronas green, for example, marks the transition between the polished and sandblasted parts of the case. Details in Petronas green can also be found on the dial and on some of the movement components. 

The Big Pilot’s Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition “AMG ONE OWNERS” is fitted with a two-tone rubber strap. Manufactured using the so-called multi-component injection moulding process, it is black on the outside and green on the inside. Numerous Mercedes stars in Petronas green are visible on the outer side of the strap.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team” (Ref. IW388108) is crafted from lightweight and remarkably rigid grade 5 titanium. Offering the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metal, titanium is also widely used in automotive engineering to produce car parts subject to immense stresses, such as engine valves. In addition, titanium is also highly corrosion-resistant. After machining and sandblasting, the surface retains an attractive greyish shimmer. A black dial with printing and luminescence in the team’s signature shade of green complement the distinctive design. The IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre, a chronograph movement in classic column-wheel design consisting of 231 individual parts, is visible through a sapphire glass back. The bi-directional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46 hours.

IWC Schaffhausen, the inventor of colored ceramic watches, has launched a new TOP GUN collection in its iconic Pilot’s Watches family. Inspiration from the world of naval aviation, such as the fascinating landscapes seen by TOP GUN pilots during training, was expressed through PANTONE® color codes. Based on these, IWC engineered completely new ceramic colors to create timepieces in a strikingly monochrome, muted design. Now, the Swiss luxury watchmaker has unveiled a global advertising campaign to accompany the new TOP GUN designs.

A CHAMPION FOR THE CAMPAIGN

The campaign stars American football quarterback Tom Brady, who has been an IWC brand ambassador since 2019. Brady has won seven World Championships, more than any other quarterback in American Football history, and 18 Division Titles so far in his unparalleled career. Yet, despite having achieved so much and having nothing left to prove, he keeps challenging himself and pushing to new heights. These character traits match the new campaign’s tagline, “We’re not here to try – we’re here to do,” making Brady the perfect choice to represent the TOP GUN mindset.

In the fast-cut short films, Brady wears the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN in black, sand-colored, green, and white ceramic. Different edits of the four films will feature on IWC’s global social media channels and YouTube.

A double chronograph with a black zirconium oxide ceramic case and titanium case back marked the birth of the TOP GUN line in IWC’s Pilot’s Watches family in 2007. Since then, advanced materials have been the hallmark of TOP GUN, lending these timepieces their distinctive technical look. In 2019, IWC introduced the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert”, the first TOP GUN model in sand-colored ceramic. Today, IWC completes the collection with two new chronographs in white and green ceramic.

Located between California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a mountainous area frequently flown over by the pilots of the U.S Navy TOPGUN School. The winter landscape around this freshwater lake as well as white uniforms have influenced the design of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Lake Tahoe” (Ref. IW389105). The chronograph features a 44.5-millimetre white ceramic case, a pitch-black dial, and black hands coated with luminescent material. IWC and Pantone have specified the ceramic color as “IWC Lake Tahoe”. The pushers and crown are made of stainless steel, the case back of titanium. The matching white rubber strap with a distinctive embossing accentuates the eye-catching design.

The flight suits of naval aviators have inspired the distinctive shade of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Woodland” (Ref. IW389106). The newly developed “IWC Woodland” green is used for the ceramic case and the dial, while the numerals and hour markers are printed in a lighter hue. The pushers and the case back are made of matte black Ceratanium®. Developed by IWC, this material combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch-resistance similar to ceramic. A matching green rubber strap with textile inlay completes the design.

Both timepieces are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69380 calibre, a robust and reliable chronograph with a column-wheel design. In addition, they feature soft iron inner cases to protect their movements from the effects of magnetic fields. The front glasses are specially secured to withstand sudden drops in air pressure. Both watches are water-resistant to 6 bar and feature the iconic TOP GUN logo as an engraving on the case back.

UNPRECEDENTED COLOR ENGINEERING 

The use of colored ceramics for the new TOP GUN chronographs added an extra layer of complexity to the design and manufacturing process. With “IWC Lake Tahoe” and “IWC Woodland”, IWC engineered two completely new ceramic colors. A major challenge was to adapt the newly developed ceramic white and green shades to numerous other components made of different materials – each with unique properties and a specific manufacturing process – such as the dial, the hands, the rubber straps and textile inlays, and even luminescent paint.

EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE WITH COLORED CERAMIC 

In the 1980s, IWC carried out pioneering work in the field of ceramic. The company first used this hard and scratch-resistant material in 1986 for the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 3755). Ceramic made its debut in the Pilot’s Watches collection with the 1994 Pilot’s Chronograph Ceramic (Ref. 3705). As early as the 1980s, IWC also experimented with different colors and produced small series or prototypes in white, blue, green, or even pink ceramic.

The production of colored ceramic cases is a particularly demanding exercise. Each case is the result of a unique formula and manufacturing process. Zirconium oxide is combined with other metallic oxides to give the ceramic its color. Each shade requires different raw materials and a distinct mixing ratio. In addition, the manufacturing process and its specific conditions – such as the temperature and the duration of the sintering process – must be adapted to the colored ceramic and its components. What’s more, colored ceramic also places significantly higher demands on the purity of the raw materials.

2022 is the year of IWC TOP GUN. In addition to launching the new “Lake Tahoe” and “Woodland” editions in white and green ceramic, IWC completes the TOP GUN collection with two new models in Ceratanium® and black ceramic. These timepieces reflect the technical and performance-oriented design that has been the hallmark of IWC TOP GUN since the brand introduced the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN back in 2007.

Ceratanium® debuted in the IWC Pilot’s Watches collection with the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium® in 2019. Now, this innovative new material returns to the TOP GUN collection with the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Ceratanium® (Ref. IW388106), the first 41-millimetre Chronograph in this collection with a case, pushers and a crown made of Ceratanium®. In addition to offering outstanding material properties like reduced weight and high scratch resistance, the most striking feature of Ceratanium® is its matte-black color, which IWC and Pantone have specified as “IWC Ceratanium®”. The dark and slightly metallic shade results from a unique manufacturing process: it develops on the surface of the material when the case components are fired at high temperatures in a kiln. Subdued white print and luminescence on the black dial and black hands underscore the all-black, stealthy design. The IWC manufactured 69385 calibre chronograph movement is visible through the tinted sapphire glass case back. The timepiece is fitted on a black rubber strap with textile inlay.

The Big Pilot’s Watch in black ceramic has been a staple in IWC’s TOP GUN line since 2012. Today, it becomes available in an ergonomic 43-millimetre case size for the first time. The Big Pilot’s Watch 43 TOP GUN (Ref. IW329801) features a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic, a titanium case back, as well as black dial and hands. The engineering ceramic used for the case offers maximum protection against scratches. IWC and Pantone have specified the black ceramic color as “IWC Jet Black”. The timepiece is powered by the IWC manufactured 82100 calibre movement. The Pellaton winding system has been fitted with components made of virtually wear-free ceramic, and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours. The integrated EasX-CHANGE® allows to change the green textile strap effortlessly. A soft-iron inner case protects the movement from the effects of magnetic fields, while the front glass is secured to remain in its place even if there is a sudden drop of air pressure.

In the 1970s, IWC began researching ways of improving existing materials and using new ones. One such project aimed to increase the scratch resistance of relatively soft stainless steel by hardening it with tungsten. As part of the collaboration with the Porsche Design studio, titanium came to the attention of the engineers. In 1980, IWC unveiled the Porsche Design Titanium Chronograph, the world’s first wristwatch with a titanium case and bracelet. The next premiere was not long in coming: in 1986, the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar was the first ever wristwatch with a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic.

Every material is different and has specific properties of its own. Titanium, for example, is lightweight and shatterproof, while ceramic is virtually non-wearing and highly scratch-resistant. So, what about combining the advantages of these two traditional IWC materials? After a development period of over five years, IWC’s materials engineers finally achieved this extraordinary feat with Ceratanium®. The new material is almost as light and robust as titanium but similarly scratch-resistant as ceramic.

IT ALL STARTS WITH A SPECIAL TITANIUM ALLOY 

Ceratanium® is not simply a mixture of titanium and ceramic. It is rather a new material developed from scratch, based on a unique titanium alloy smelted according to IWC’s stringent specifications. Various case components, such as the casing ring and case back, the crown and push-buttons, are turned and milled from bars and flat sections of this alloy. The machining process is carried out by cutting-edge, high-precision, computer-controlled turning and milling systems. Finally, the surfaces are sandblasted by hand to give the parts a slightly uneven, matte surface.

PHASE TRANSFORMATION TAKES PLACE IN KILN 

There now follows the decisive, final step in the manufacture of a Ceratanium® case. The components are placed in a kiln and baked at a precisely defined temperature for a prescribed time. The specific composition of the titanium alloy means that when certain process parameters are reached, oxygen diffuses into the material, resulting in a phase transformation. The surface then takes on properties similar to those typical of ceramics, such as a high degree of hardness and scratch resistance. The firing process also imbues the parts with their unique matte black colour.

 COMPLETELY BLACK WITH NO NEED FOR COATING 

One of the central reasons for the development of Ceratanium® was the desire for a completely black watch. The watch industry frequently uses coating processes like physical vapour deposition (PVD) to make black cases. Steel, for example, is coated with an ultra-thin DLC (diamond-like carbon) layer. Unfortunately, coatings chip easily or can peel off the base material if the watch gets banged or knocked, which explains why such processes do not meet IWC’s strict quality requirements. With Ceratanium®, the surface is inseparably fused with the material, rather like the crust on a loaf of bread. And that means it does not come away so easily.

EVEN TINY ADD-ON PARTS CAN BE MACHINED 

While black watch cases can be made of ceramic, it is enormously costly or simply impossible to produce small auxiliary parts with this material. One of the reasons for this is that a ceramic workpiece shrinks by around a third when sintered. In addition, ceramics cannot be machined using just any shaping process - for example, they could easily shatter if milled or drilled. Ceratanium® is quite different: the material is based on a titanium alloy and offers virtually unlimited freedom during the shaping process. In addition to the main case parts, all the add-on parts can likewise be made from it. The result is an entirely black watch. 

Ceratanium® made its debut in the Aquatimer family in 2017. Since then, the material has been used several times in the Pilot’s Watch collection. More recently, IWC succeeded in producing its first multi-link bracelet made entirely of Ceratanium®. Because titanium is around 30 percent lighter than steel, the bracelet is extremely comfortable to wear.

The new campaign pairs the skiing prodigy with the new Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41. In the TV spot, footage of Gu skating in the park and on the slopes is combined with her talking directly to the camera, asking the viewer to rethink preconceptions and push for their dreams, whatever they may be. She explains, “Our stage is not the future. Our stage is now”, as she speaks to her modern and multi-faceted generation.

In the campaign, Gu demonstrates perfectly the talent and determination she relies on in her career, expressing herself with confidence and passion. Joining the world of freestyle skiing when she was just eight, Gu has broken one record after another over the past decade, most recently becoming the first woman to land a forward double cork 1440 in 2021. She is currently enjoying an extraordinary competitive run, taking first place six times and second place twice in her last eight World Cup competitions in the US and Canada and becoming the first skier ever to win four consecutive freestyle World Cup competitions.

Over the years, IWC Schaffhausen has manufactured numerous field watches for different branches of the British military. Arguably, the most famous one is the Mark 11, a navigation watch engineered in 1948 for the British Royal Air Force. However, IWC has also supplied watches to the British Army and deck watches to the Royal Navy. These mil-spec service watches were characterised by high-precision movements, extreme ruggedness, functional designs with easily legible dials, and purpose-built technical features such as soft-iron inner cases to provide protection against magnetic fields. The Spitfire Pilot’s Watches reflect this chapter in the brand’s history. Featuring a distinctive military design, they take their name from the iconic British aeroplane of the time, one of the most sophisticated developments in the history of aviation.

The Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Spitfire (Ref. IW329701) features a case, case back and crown made from lightweight and robust grade 5 titanium. The dark grey matte colour results from an elaborate surface treatment in which the components are first polished and then sandblasted. The design of the black dial was inspired by historical observation watches. Only the minutes and seconds are printed in white on the outer ring, while the hours appear smaller and in a more discreet grey print on the inner ring. Traditionally, this layout made it easier for pilots and navigators to read the minutes and seconds at just a glance. They needed this information to perform tasks like celestial navigation during visual flights. The distinctive field watch design is complemented with a brown calfskin leather strap with contrast stitching.

The Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Spitfire (Ref. IW329702) features a bronze case and crown as well as a titanium case back. Alongside copper, the bronze used by IWC also contains aluminium and iron. This specific composition makes the alloy around 50 per cent harder than standard bronze. Additional characteristics include the material’s exceptional biocompatibility and its ability to develop a unique patina over time, which will give each timepiece a distinct character and look of its own. The warm colour of the bronze harmonises with the military green dial and the gold-plated hands. Both the hands and hour markers have been coated with a luminescent material to facilitate readability at night. The timepiece is fitted with a green buffalo leather strap with a unique texture. The two new Spitfire models feature IWC’s EasXCHANGE system which allows the wearer to quickly and easily change the strap at the touch of a button without any additional tools. Several alternative strap options made from calfskin and rubber are also available as accessories.

PRECISE AND RELIABLE 82100 IN-HOUSE CALIBRE

At work inside the case is the IWC-manufactured 82100 calibre movement. This high-end automatic movement has been engineered with a focus on maximum precision and reliability. It features the efficient winding system developed by IWC’s former technical director Albert Pellaton during the 1950s, which uses the slightest movements of the rotor in either direction to wind the mainspring. Other components, like the automatic wheel or the pawls, are made of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. When fully wound, the mainspring holds a power reserve of 60 hours.

Chronographs are a core competence of IWC. The mechanical stopwatch is also a mainstay in the brand’s Pilot’s Watches collection. Now, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer pairs its most iconic aviator’s watch with a chronograph function for the first time.

The monopusher chronograph is controlled via a single push-button integrated into the crown, making it exceptionally user-friendly and practical. When the button is pushed once, a new timing starts. Pressing the button a second time stops the timing. Stop times of up to one hour are displayed on the totaliser at 12 o’clock. When the button is pushed a third time, the chronograph is reset to zero.

In the tradition of IWC’s special editions in honour of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s world-famous novel,the Big Pilot’s Watch Monopusher Edition “Le Petit Prince” features the signature deep-blue sunburst dial. It is complemented with a stainless-steel case and rhodiumplated hands. In addition, the hands, indices, and applied numerals have been coated with luminous material to make the dial easier to read at night.

The IWC-manufactured 59365 calibre is one of three in-house chronograph movements from IWC. Alongside the movements from the 69000 and 89000 calibre families, it underscores the comprehensive expertise that IWC has acquired in the design and manufacturing of chronographs. In addition, it is also the brand’s only chronograph movement that is wound manually: 70 revolutions of the crown are enough to build up the maximum power reserve of eight days. A power-reserve indication on the back of the movement, which can be seen through the sapphire-glass case back, shows the energy remaining in the mainspring.

Fitted with a brown calfskin strap with a folding clasp, the Big Pilot’s Watch Monopusher Edition “Le Petit Prince” is available through IWC boutiques, authorised retail partners or online on IWC.com. Advanced performance materials such as ceramics, titanium and Ceratanium® are a signature feature of IWC’s TOP GUN pilot’s watches. They take their name from the legendary Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program, a rigorous course used by the US Navy to train its elite pilots in flying and tactical skills. TOP GUN watches are engineered to deliver ultimate performance and can withstand even the extreme strain pilots experience in the cockpit of a supersonic jet.

After pioneering the use of ceramics and titanium for wristwatches during the 1980s, IWC’s material engineers have now succeeded in combining the unique strengths of these two in a single, ground-breaking material. Developed over five years, Ceratanium® combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch-resistance similar to ceramic. In addition, Ceratanium® is also skin-friendly and highly resistant to corrosion.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar TOP GUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW503604) features a case, crown and, for the first time, a bracelet made of Ceratanium®. As this material is based on a titanium alloy, the bracelet is around 30 percent lighter than a steel bracelet and extremely comfortable to wear. The black dial with gray numerals enhances the jet-black design. This TOP GUN model is powered by the IWC-manufactured 52615 calibre, visible through the tinted sapphire glass case back. The Pellaton winding system is fitted with components made of virtually wear-free ceramic and builds up a power reserve of seven days in two barrels. A single nightly switching impulse from the base movement drives the perpetual calendar. Its mechanical program automatically recognizes different month lengths and leap years and will require no correction until 2100. Another IWC specialty is the specific moon phase display, which depicts the moon as it is seen from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It is so precise that it will only deviate by one day after 577.5 years. The annual production of this extraordinary timepiece will be limited to 150 pieces.

The Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW395505) is the first TOP GUN model with a Timezoner® complication. The watch can be set to a different time zone by simply pressing down and rotating the bezel. The hour hand, the 24-hour display and the date will move forwards or backwards in one-hour steps. This also works across the dateline and without losing a single second. The case is made of Ceratanium®, while the city ring is manufactured from ceramic. It contains the names of 24 cities, each one representing one of the international time zones. The numerals are printed in gray on the dial, while the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9 are coated with a luminescent material. The jet-black tactical design is complemented with a tinted sapphire glass case back and a black rubber strap with textile inlay. The IWC-manufactured 82760 calibre uses a Pellaton winding system reinforced with ceramic components to build up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring. The annual production of the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner TOP GUN Ceratanium will be limited to 500 pieces.

MACHINED FROM BARS AND FIRED AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

Ceratanium® is arguably one of IWC’s most important material innovations in recent years. IWC first used this material in 2017 for the case of the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition “50 Years Aquatimer” (Ref. 379403). In 2019, the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium (Ref. IW371815) was the first all-black Pilot’s Watch. Ceratanium® is based on a special titanium alloy that is forged to IWC’s specifications. The case components are machined from bars to minimal tolerances using computer-controlled turning and milling centers and are then elaborately finished by hand. Afterwards, the components are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. During this firing process, a phase transformation occurs. As a result, the surface of the material not only obtains properties similar to ceramics, such as hardness and scratchresistance, but also its striking matte black finish.

At the Members’ Meeting, the iconic Goodwood Motor Circuit plays host to incredible grids of racing machines ranging from classic tin-tops and GTs, to motorcycles and open wheeled Formula 3™ and F1™ machines. The 78th Goodwood Members’ Meeting, taking place this weekend in the South of England, is sure to deliver on this promise with two adrenaline-filled days of qualifying, racing, high-speed demonstrations and fabulous festivities. After what seems like a small eternity, the IWC Racing Team is now making its comeback on the legendary Goodwood Motor Circuit. It was back in April 2019 – a full 20 months ago – when the team last appeared at Goodwood and living Formula One™ legend David Coulthard took first place in the Tony Gaze Trophy. This year, Austrian racing driver Laura Kraihamer will take her seat in the cockpit of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”. The new member of the IWC Racing family is set to compete in the Stirling Moss Trophy tomorrow, Sunday.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “IWC x Hot Wheels™ Racing Works” (Ref. I W377904) features a 43-millimeter case made of grade 5 titanium. This metal was chosen as an “engineering material” favored by the Hot Wheels and IWC design teams. It is lighter and harder than steel, highly resistant to corrosion, and often used in automotive engineering. The dark grey matte color results from an elaborate surface treatment in which the case components are first polished and then blasted. The case features a stunning engraving of the Hot Wheels flame logo on its side at 9 o’clock. The black dial is decorated with a subtle chequered racing flag pattern around the chronograph totalizers. Depending on the incidence of light, the laser-engraved squares alternate between a lighter and darker shade, giving the dial visual depth and a textured appearance. Powering the chronograph is the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre movement, which is visible through the smoked glass case back. The timepiece is fitted on a silver and black 1-piece textile strap, which picks up the color scheme of the IWC Racing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.

The set also includes the Hot Wheels Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Racing Works Edition”. This exclusive Hot Wheels model was created by the Hot Wheels design team, sculpted, and detailed by Manson Cheung with graphics by Steve Vandervate and IWC designer Nicholas Schmidt. It’s one of the most detailed 1:64th Hot Wheels model ever created. Only 50 models have been manufactured exclusively in Hot Wheels’ prototyping workshop. This version features opening gullwing doors, a faithfully reproduced interior complete with bucket seats, roll cage and red sill trims, full external detailing including clear headlights with the MB Star braces and racing graphics. As this set will be a limited run of only 50 pieces, the car will take its place as one of the rarest official Hot Wheels models ever released.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “IWC x Hot Wheels™ Racing Works” and the Hot Wheels Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Racing Works Edition” both bear the number 68 – a subtle nod to 1868 and 1968 respectively when IWC and Hot Wheels were founded. In addition, bespoke packaging makes the set even more exclusive: The chronograph and the model car are presented in a metal toolbox in silver and black. The case also contains the instruction manual for the watch, a booklet about the project and a limitation plate with the individual corresponding set number.

Set number 1 will be auctioned for charity by Bonhams. Starting today, enthusiasts can place their bids online until October 22nd. The proceeds from the auction will go to the Two Bit Circus Foundation. This Foundation wants to create learning experiences for children in all economic situations to inspire entrepreneurship, encourage young inventors and instill environmental stewardship. The Watches and Wonders exhibition in China Duty Free Mall of Sanya has opened its doors to the public. From October 1st to December 31st, the seaside resort located on the southern end of Hainan Island turns into the global centre of luxury watchmaking. IWC Schaffhausen marks a strong presence at the exhibition held at the Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex.

In the IWC Big Pilot’s booth, visitors can discover the latest Pilot’s Watch novelties from Schaffhausen. One of many highlights is the Big Pilot’s Watch 43. This new version of IWC’s most iconic aviator’s watch features a 43-millimetre case and is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82200 calibre movement. The case and conical crown have been carefully re-engineered to combine a bold presence on the wrist with improved ergonomics and wearing comfort. Also shown are the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 or the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar. Another focus area is Pilot’s Watches made with robust performance materials such as ceramic and Ceratanium®. A particular highlight is the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Mojave Desert” in sand-coloured ceramic. In addition, the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium features IWC’s latest material innovation Ceratanium®. But enthusiasts of fine watchmaking will also get their rewards in Sanya, as they can discover some of the most complicated timepieces created in Schaffhausen. On display are marvels like the Portugieser Tourbillon Mystère Retrograde or the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar, featuring the iconic perpetual calendar developed by IWC’s former head-watchmaker, Kurt Klaus. A special highlight is the Portugieser Minute Repeater, which announces the time to the nearest minute using a series of chimes from inside the watch. Comprising more than 200 individual parts, the repeater mechanism is arguably the most sophisticated complication that can be integrated into a wristwatch.

AN EXHIBITION ABOUT ENGINEERING AND INNOVATION

But IWC brings another spectacular highlight to Watches and Wonders Sanya. Over a surface of 200 square metres, the brand tells the story of its new engineering and timekeeping partnership with Airspeeder, the world’s first racing series for electric flying cars. Airspeeder founder Matt Pearson envisions an entire grid of eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) craft, competing at a height of up to 40 metres and racing at top speeds of up to 200 km/h. Combining their passion for technological progress, human endeavour, and sustainability, IWC and Airspeeder will work together to pioneer this new form of motorsport and fast-track a new era of clean-air mobility. At the centre of the Airspeeder booth are two prototypes of Airspeeder MK4 multicopters in their original size. The design marries a classic 1960s sports car with a futuristic aircraft. These 8-bladed eVTOL crafts use the latest carbon fibre composite and EV battery technologies. A key component will be an anti-collision system based on laser and radar technology, which will create a “virtual force field” around the vehicles to enable gripping but always safe air races.

These races will play a vital role in accelerating the arrival of electric flying cars by creating a space and a place for the eVTOL industry to rapidly develop key safety and performance technologies. In this sense, Matt Pearson and his vision for Airspeeder plays the same role that racing did at the dawn of the automotive and aviation ages. This partnership echos the role IWC has played in enabling the vision of pioneers of both aviation and racing and creates a bold new legacy at the start of today’s clean-air advanced mobility revolution.

At the exhibition, visitors can also learn more about IWC’s new engineering division IWC Experimental and its first brainchild, the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL, featuring the patented SPRIN-g PROTECT shock absorber system. Other topics include IWC’s expertise in advanced technical case materials, the award-winning IWC Manufacturing Centre, or the IWC Laboratory.

Ever since IWC engineered the first Pilot’s Watch 85 years ago, the company has fostered an in-depth dialogue with pilots to precisely understand their specific needs and requirements. This exchange has been particularly crucial for developing the brand’s mil-spec service watches, like the Mark 11 for the British Royal Air Force. Today, IWC continues this dialogue within the frame of its military program, which emerged from the brand’s partnership with the U.S. Navy. Since 2018, IWC is licensed to work on watches for the entire U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviation units, including Blue Angels® and the 247 active and 100 inactive squadrons. IWC has since collaborated with more than a dozen squadrons to create special editions that are exclusively available to present and former members.

Now, IWC releases three new chronographs in its Pilot’s Watches collection, which are directly inspired by the brand’s collaborations with U.S. Navy squadrons, marking the first time these designs are available to non-pilots. The annual production of these chronographs will be limited to 500 pieces each.

Strike Fighter Squadron 27, known as the “Royal Maces”, is stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Japan and forms part of Carrier Air Wing 5. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Royal Maces” (Ref. IW389107) is inspired by the military-exclusive edition IWC has developed with members of the squadron. The chronograph features a black zirconium oxide ceramic case. The pushers and the crown are made of Ceratanium®. The dial features the “Maces” patch at 6 o’clock and also has a yellow day-date indication. The yellow stitching on the strap, the tip of the chronograph seconds hand and the small seconds add details in the signature “Maces” colour. The case back is made of grade 5 titanium and features an engraving of the squadron’s F/A-18E Super Hornet jet next to the official squadron denomination “VFA-27”.

Naval Air Station Lemoore in California is the home base of The Strike Fighter Squadron 14, nicknamed “Tophatters”. Having formed in 1919, VFA-14 is the Navy’s oldest active squadron. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tophatters” (Ref. IW389108) has a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic. The chronograph pushers and the crown are manufactured Ceratanium®. Developed by IWC, this material is as light and robust as titanium and at the same time similarly hard and scratch-resistant like ceramic. The squadron’s patch with the classic top hat can be found at 6 o’clock on the dial and engraved on the titanium case back. The day-date display, the tip of the chronograph seconds hand, the small seconds and the stitching on the black calfskin strap add more details in the squadron’s characteristic red.

Established in 1946, the “Blue Angels®” U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron is currently made up of 141 members from the Navy and Marines. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Blue Angels®” (Ref. IW389109) is the third timepiece to emerge from IWC’s license agreement. Inspired by the military-exclusive watch developed with Blue Angels members in Pensacola, the chronograph features a blue ceramic case. The bright blue colour is the result of mixing zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides. Here, too, the chronograph pushers and the crown are made of IWC-developed Ceratanium®. The iconic “Blue Angels®” crest with the U.S. Navy Wings of Gold is at 6 o’clock on the dial; the characteristic lettering is engraved on the titanium case back. Yellow details are provided by the chronograph seconds hand, the small seconds and the day-date display at 3 o’clock. This watch is fitted with a blue rubber strap with textile inlay.

IN-HOUSE COLUMN-WHEEL CHRONOGRAPH MOVEMENT

The IWC-manufactured 69380 calibre movement powers the new chronographs. Consisting of 231 individual parts, this mechanical chronograph movement is engineered with a focus on robustness, reliability and precision. A column wheel controls the stopwatch function. The bi-directional pawl-winding system supplies the movement with energy, building up a power reserve of 46 hours. The timepieces also feature a soft-iron inner case to protect the movement efficiently from the effects of magnetic fields. The front glasses are specially secured to avoid displacement in the case of sudden drops of air pressure. The Pilot’s Watches Chronograph Edition “Royal Maces”, Edition “Tophatters” and Edition “Blue Angels®” will be available from September 9th through IWC boutiques, authorised retail partners or online on IWC.com. The Pilot’s Watch Automatic Edition “Laureus Sport for Good” (Ref. IW328101) is the 15th Laureus special edition. It comes with an exclusive first: In addition to the dial in the trademark Laureus blue, a blue ceramic case has been used for the first time. The dark blue hue of the ceramic is the result of a complex manufacturing process. Powdered zirconium oxide is mixed with other metallic oxides, shaped, and then sintered in a furnace. Coloured ceramics place enormously high demands on the quality and purity of the raw materials. On the blue dial designed to mimic a cockpit instrument, the time can be read at a glance. Thanks to the luminescent coating, this is possible even at night. A precise rate is ensured by the IWC-manufactured 32111 calibre movement. Thanks to an improved barrel construction, the mainspring can hold an impressive power reserve of five days. A soft iron inner cage effectively shields the movement from the effects of magnetic fields. Limited to 750 pieces, this sporty pilot’s watch is fitted with a blue rubber strap with textile inlay.

As is the long-standing tradition with the Laureus special editions, the back of the case features a special highlight: The titanium case back is engraved with the winning design from the drawing competition that IWC organises every year within all the programmes supported by Laureus Sport for Good. It was created by 12-year-old Melissa Mejía Castilla from Colombia and is entitled “Vivir en Armonía” (Living in Peace). Melissa participates in activities organised by Fundación Colombianitos - an organisation that, among other things, promotes gender equality through sport. The watches will be worn by the four crew members on their journey into space, before being auctioned as part of the mission’s aim to raise funds for and promote the life-saving work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Inspiration4” features a case made of stunning white ceramic. The unique color results from a complex manufacturing process in which zirconium oxide is mixed with other metallic oxides in a precisely defined ratio. With a Vickers rating second only to that of diamond, engineering ceramic ranks among the hardest substances on the planet. The dark blue lacquered dial has been padprinted with countless stars and captures the depth and darkness of space. It also features the Inspiration4 logo. Inside beats the IWC-manufactured 69380 caliber chronograph movement. On each of the four watches, the titanium case back has been engraved with the name and mission value represented by the respective crew member. The chronographs are fitted with an eyecatching white rubber strap with a leather inlay.

Named Inspiration4 in recognition of the diverse, four-person crew’s mission to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® and send a humanitarian message of possibility, the multi-day journey to low-Earth orbit represents a new era for human spaceflight and exploration. The mission is the brainchild of Jared Isaacman, a 38-year-old entrepreneur and accomplished pilot who will also serve as Commander. The mission is set to launch in September from historical Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The spacecraft will orbit the planet at an altitude of approximately 357 miles (575 kilometres) and a speed of more than 17,500 miles per hour (27,360 kph). After the multi-day journey, the crew will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere for a soft water landing off the coast of Florida.

A CREW REPRESENTING FOUR MISSION VALUES

At the heart of Inspiration4 is a unique and varied crew. Isaacman occupies the Leadership mission seat and serves as Commander. He is the founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments and an accomplished commercial and military pilot who holds several aviation world records. The mission seat representing Hope was awarded to Hayley Arceneaux, a 29-year-old physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® and a pediatric cancer survivor. Dr Sian Proctor, a 51-year-old entrepreneur and trained pilot, earned the mission seat representing Prosperity as the winning entrant in a business competition. Finally, the Generosity mission seat will be occupied by Christopher Sembroski. The 41-yearold aerospace industry employee and United States Air Force veteran contributed to a fundraising campaign that offered an Inspiration4 seat to one lucky donor.

The crew is currently undergoing commercial astronaut training at SpaceX, focusing on orbital mechanics, operating in microgravity, zero gravity, and other forms of stress testing. In addition, they will receive emergency preparedness training, complete spacecraft ingress and egress exercises and take part in partial and full-mission simulations.

IWC’s new campaign pairs Lewis Hamilton with the Big Pilot’s Watch, underscoring the unique status of both. First introduced to the luxury market in 2002, the Big Pilot’s Watch has evolved into a modern design icon and an expression of a distinct mindset. MISAN HARRIMAN ANNOUNCED AS IWC BRAND AMBASSADOR

The campaign imagery was shot by renowned photographer Misan Harriman. Born in Nigeria, Harriman was raised in the UK and recently made history by becoming the first black person in the 104-years of British Vogue to shoot the cover of the magazine’s September issue. Entirely self-taught, he has documented many recent defining moments in history and is known for his unique narrative and reportage style. IWC is pleased to announce that Harriman will join its circle of brand ambassadors. The British photographer also appears in IWC’s digital Big Pilot’s Watch campaign. In a short video available on the brand’s digital channels, he talks about milestones in his career and his love for the Big Pilot’s Watch. The long-standing collaboration between the Swiss luxury watchmaker and the performance and sports car brand Mercedes-AMG, is grounded in many common values, including the pursuit of technical perfection and uncompromising quality. Both companies were created by visionaries with bold ideas. In 1868, Florentine Ariosto Jones combined traditional craftsmanship with advanced industrial technology to redefine watchmaking in Switzerland. Crafted from automotive engineering materials, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” (Ref. IW377903) is IWC‘s first 43mm Pilot‘s Watch Chronograph featuring the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre, as well as the first Pilot‘s Watch Chronograph with a case made of extremely light and scratch-resistant titanium. The Grade 5 titanium finish gives the watch its matte grey appearance, inspired by AMG‘s signature Selenite Grey Magno paint finish. The dial features precisely woven carbon fibre, a material directly derived from AMG‘s aero components. These parts are produced in a complex process involving heat and pressure and are known for their remarkable lightness and rigidity. The raw material is continuous carbon fibres, which are processed on weaving machines into textile structures, giving the end product its characteristic woven “carbon look”. The black carbon dial provides the perfect contrast to the silver chronograph sub-dials, reminiscent of motorsport instruments.

The all-around performance watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured calibre 69385, a robust and precise chronograph movement that enables stop time measurements of up to 12 hours. The chronograph function is controlled by a column wheel, an intricate component with two functional levels. The Mercedes-AMG logo is emblazoned on the tinted sapphire crystal case back. The timepiece is fitted with a black embossed calf leather strap with contrast stitching and folding clasp.

The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “AMG” was unveiled at a webcast hosted by Philipp Schiemer and Christoph Grainger-Herr. Both elaborated on their passion for racing, the values both brands share, and the sustainable future of watchmaking and mobility. They were joined by Maro Engel, who brought in the perspective of a professional racing driver. A CONSTANT FORCE ENSURES EVEN OSCILLATIONS

The powerful engine is the IWC-manufactured 94800 calibre, one of the most complicated mechanical movements ever designed in Schaffhausen. The patented constant-force mechanism disengages the escapement from the direct flow of power through the wheel train and transmits completely even impulses of energy to the escape wheel. In conjunction with the tourbillon, which compensates for the negative influences of gravity on the oscillating system, this ensures a highly accurate rate. The plates and bridges are fully blackened having undergone an elaborate rhodium-plating process to match the colour of the case. The movement, which is reminiscent of an engine block, can be viewed through the sapphire glass back.

THE FIRST BIG PILOT’S WATCH IN CERATANIUM®

The 46.2-millimetre case, striking conical crown and pin buckle are all made of Ceratanium®. This IWC-developed material is light and robust like titanium but also similarly hard and scratch-resistant like ceramic. During the first step of the manufacturing process, the components are machined with maximum precision from a proprietary titanium alloy. Afterwards, they are fired at very high temperatures in a kiln. It is during this furnacing process that a phase transformation takes place, and the surface of the material assumes properties similar to those of ceramic. Other characteristics of Ceratanium® are its skin-friendliness and unique matte black finish.

DETAILS INSPIRED BY THE WORLD OF RACING

While the constant-force tourbillon at 9 o’clock is the eyecatcher on the dial, the design also features a double moon phase display for the northern and southern hemispheres. White numerals and yellow-coloured accents imitate a dashboard, while the power reserve display at 4 o’clock is reminiscent of a tachometer. The louvred, ring-shaped structure of the outer dial ring takes inspiration from the cold air intakes of a high-performance engine. Even the black rubber strap incorporates a detail from the world of racing. It features an inlay made of Alcantara®*, a synthetic and durable micro-fibre with superb grip, which is often used for the seats and steering wheel covers of performance cars.

DISCOVER THE LATEST IWC EDITIONS FIRST HAND

A faithful interpretation of an iconic observation watch design, the new IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43 features an ergonomic 43-millimetre stainless steel case. Available with either a black or blue dial, it is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82100 calibre with Pellaton winding, which is visible through a sapphire glass back. The user-friendly EasX-CHANGE strap system, as well as the comprehensive calf leather and rubber strap and stainless steel bracelet options, establishes the Big Pilot’sWatch 43 as a quintessential modern utility sports watch, ready for adventures in the air, on land and by water.

IWC is further demonstrating its high-tech capability and craftsmanship by showcasing several other exciting new timepieces at the event. The IWC Pilot’s Chronograph 41 in an ergonomic 41-millimetre case, powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre, represents the brand’s chronograph expertise.

The specially formulated sand-coloured ceramic, used for the case on both models of the Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Mojave Desert Edition, is one of the hardest materials on the planet and demonstrates the brand’s know-how in materials.

IWC’s legendary perpetual calendar, developed in the 1980s by Kurt Klaus, IWC’s former head watchmaker, is showcased too, as it powers the new Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar. It works alongside the IWC manufactured 52615 calibre and features a Pellaton winding system fitted with ceramic components.

Guests can also take a closer look at IWC’s new Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL, which is the first watch to feature the brand’s patented new shock absorber system. Developed over eight years, the SPRIN-g PROTECT system is based on a cantileverspring that suspends the movement inside the case. Thanks to its perfect form and the use of Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG), the spring protects the movement against the g-forces generated during impacts on the watch.

TELLING THE BIG PILOT’S STORY: FROM FUNCTIONALITY TO CULTURAL ICON

Over the last 85 years, the classic Big Pilot’s Watch design has evolved from a functional aviation watch into a cultural icon, inspiring creators from many fields, including the arts, fashion, photography and design. With the launch of so many innovative new Big Pilot’s Watch editions this year, IWC wanted to celebrate its iconic story at Watches and Wonders in a fresh and exciting way.

To do this, the Manufacture called upon a select number of friends of the brand to feature on a ‘Talent Wall’ in their booth and tell their story of pushing boundaries and redefining the status quo. Starring in short inspirational videos, each friend of the brand shares how they made their ambitions come true and details how the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch has accompanied them as they have dreamed big on their journey to success.

Friends include: Billy Monger, a racing driver, disability campaigner and challenger; Hayden Cox, a designer and advocate for sustainable surfing; Lu Yan, a womenswear designer and sustainability campaigner; Guillaume Philibert, a streetwear brand creator; Matt Pearson, the co-founder of Airspeeder; Matt Jones, a world record breaker and IWC Longest Flight pilot; Misan Harriman, a photographer, creative director and cultural commentator; Mark Ong, a streetwear designer and artist; Hani Rashid, an architect and educator; Alexvi, a leading fashion and portraiture photographer; and Ye Tao, an internationally-renowned dancer and choreographer who developed the “Circular Movement System”.

A PEEK INTO THE FUTURE OF WATCHMAKING

IWC also wanted to showcase its engineering spirit and high-tech expertise at the event through several new technology displays. In a world-first for watch brands, IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr is being ‘teleported’ directly from Schaffhausen to the Shanghai event. Thanks to innovative new hologram technology, a life-sized Grainger-Herr is appearing at Watches and Wonders, presenting the most important watch novelties of the year to an astonished audience and welcoming visitors to the booth.

For the rest of the event, the technology is also enabling attendees to interact inreal-time with watchmakers at work in the Schaffhausen manufacturing center. Elsewhere, 3D-printed models that reveal the magic of watchmaking in even its smallest details are on show. Both mechanical movement parts and the process of creating new lighter and more resilient materials, such as titanium, steel, Ceratanium®, ceramics and bronze, are being brought to life through this innovative medium. In the Lab area of the fair, IWC is also demonstrating the innovative Cyberloupe 2.0 to those in attendance. The newly-upgraded digital watchmaker’s magnifying glass is now equipped with a completely revised design, and higher quality cameras, lenses and software that enable better and more detailed streaming quality. With the new Cyberloupe 2.0, watchmakers can share their view with other people worldwide and have any information they require displayed right in front of their eyes by scanning a QR code or opening a browser.

Besides discovering the brand’s most recent watches and latest technology, guests can also participate in hands-on IWC workshops and attend panel sessions on a wide range of topics such as auctions, collecting, oriconic designs.

From the pioneering days of flying to the supersonic jets used in naval aviation today, pilots operate under extreme conditions in cramped cockpits surrounded by sharp-edged metal objects. Therefore, extraordinary robustness has always been one of the most important functional requirements for IWC’s pilot’s watches. In recent years, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer has taken robustness to ever greater heights by using exceptionally durable and scratch-resistant materials such as Ceratanium®. After an 8-year engineering journey, IWC has now succeeded in pushing the limits of what is physically possible in movement shock protection.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL (Ref. IW357201) is the first IWC watch to feature the patented SPRIN-g PROTECT system. At the heart of this system is a cantilever spring that protects the movement against the g-forces generated by impacts on the watch. It cushions the movement, allowing it to keep moving independentlym of the case before bringingnit to a stop more gently.

“When a watch suffers an impact, the movement and its components are subjected to high g-forces. If a pilot accidentally hits his watch against a hard surface in the cockpit, for example, accelerations are in the range of 300 to 1000 g. Our shock absorber system protects the movement so efficiently that it has survived accelerations in excess of 30,000 g in impact tests,” explains Dr Lorenz Brunner, Department Manager Research and Innovation at IWC Schaffhausen

A PERFECT FORM AND AN ADVANCED MATERIAL

The key to this performance lies in the spring’s perfect form and the material used to make it. The spring has been designed to evenly spread the stress across its length and width. Solving this challenge required advanced simulation tools and a painstaking design process. A second decisive factor is the choice of Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG) as a material. A sophisticated manufacturing process gives BMG an amorphous microstructure, with the result that it is significantly more elastic than conventional metals. An ultralightweight titanium casing ring further reduces the mass that the shock absorber must hold. Another innovation is a unique crown system with a winding stem that allows the movement to displace independently of the case.

CUSTOM-MADE LIGHTWEIGHT MOVEMENT

Reducing the mass to be protected by the spring is critical for the system’s overall performance. The IWCmanufactured 32115 calibre used for this watch is a custom-made lightweight construction. Components like the base plate are made from a high-tech aluminium alloy used in the aerospace sector, which is light and highly rigid. The bidirectional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 120 hours.

COMPREHENSIVELY TESTED WITH REAL IMPACTS

To put the SPRIN-g PROTECT system through its paces under the most realistic conditions, IWC collaborated with the Fracture & Shock Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University in England, U.K. The scientists used laser-based measurement methods and high-speed video recording to measure the effects that impacts show on the movement. During these comprehensive tests, protected movements have survived the extreme forces from accelerations in excess of 30,000 g.

STEALTH DESIGN IN MATTE BLACK CERATANIUM®

The XPL in the name of the watch stands for “experimental” and refers to the IWC Experimental engineering division. The powerful case geometry takes the iconic shape of the Big Pilot’s design to a completely new level by adding a futuristic surface treatment and details throughout the entire watch exterior. The case is made of Ceratanium®, an IWC-developed material based on a proprietary titanium alloy. It is as light and robust as titanium but at the same time similarly hard and scratchresistant as ceramic. The components are milled from bars and fired at high temperatures in a kiln. During this process, the surface assumes the characteristics of ceramics and gets its unique matte black finish. The stealthy black design is complemented with a black dial, a technical anti-reflective coating on the front glass, and a black rubber strap with leather inlay.

Due to the complexity of the manufacturing process, the annual production of the Big Pilot‘s Watch Shock Absorber XPL will be limited to 10 pieces per year and 30 pieces in total. The watch is available exclusively to order through IWC boutiques or our concierge service.
