Since it was first published over 80 years ago, “The Little Prince” has remained immensely popular with both children and adults. The enchanting story follows a Little Prince as he embarks on a journey through space to faraway planets, gaining valuable insights along the way. In his most famous literary work, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry explores profound philosophical themes such as love, loss, and friendship. One of the book’s iconic quotes is, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” It serves as a potent reminder that true understanding and beauty come from emotions and feelings, rather than merely seeing. IWC Schaffhausen now introduces its first Le Petit Prince edition in the Portofino collection. 

The Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 Le Petit Prince (Ref. IW459806) features a compact 34-millimetre case crafted in durable stainless steel. The design of this elegant and timeless dress watch is complemented with a deep blue dial with gold-plated hands and appliques. These dials, which are treated with an elaborate sunray finish, are a signature feature of IWC’s special editions honoring Saint-Exupéry’s timeless tale. A highlight of this watch is the day-and-night indication at 6 o’clock, which visualises the continuous transition between day and night and completes one full rotation every 24 hours. At noon or at midnight, either the sun or the moon appears in the upper section of the small disc, indicating whether it is currently day or night. As a charming design detail, the Little Prince is depicted standing on the moon, gazing at the starry night sky. The stainless steel case back also features an engraving of the Little Prince. 

This watch is powered by the Calibre 35180, which features an automatic winding system and has a power reserve of 50 hours. It is paired with a hand-coloured blue alligator leather strap from the Italian leather artisan Santoni, which is equipped with a quick-change system and a butterfly folding clasp.

The Portofino Automatic Pointer Date Laureus (Ref. IW359202) features a 39-millimetre stainless steel case and a dial with a sunray finish in the characteristic Laureus blue colour. The applied indices, the roman “XII” numeral at 12 o’clock and the hands are rhodium-plated.

The eye-catcher on the dial is the analogue pointer-date indication at 6 o’clock. At midnight, the small pointer will jump to the new date. This understated and elegant Portofino watch is fitted with a blue calfskin strap with a stainless steel butterfly folding clasp. The case back features an engraving of the Laureus Sport for Good logo and also reminds of the 25^th anniversary that the foundation is celebrating this year. At work inside the case is the 35160 calibre with automatic winding and a power reserve of 50 hours.

After bringing the iconic perpetual calendar back to the Portofino line, IWC Schaffhausen presents three new models with calendar and date complications. While underscoring the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer’s extensive know-how and experience in engineering functional and robust complications, these references also reflect the casual yet elegant design code that has distinguished the Portofino line since it was created in 1984.

Presented in a 41-millimetre case size in 18-carat 5N gold or stainless steel, the Portofino Complete Calendar (Ref. 3590) is the first IWC timepiece to feature the newly developed complete calendar module. The subdial at 12 o’clock displays the day of the week and the moon phase, while the date and month are shown at 6 o’clock. The calendar module consists of 69 individual parts. Each display is driven by a separate gear train and can be adjusted independently of the others via the crown or using two correction buttons integrated into the side of the case. The calendar only needs to be adjusted in months with less than 31 days. On the last day of the month, the date must be manually set to position 31 via the crown. All displays, including the high-precision moon phase display, will then automatically advance by one day around midnight. The calendar module is mounted on top of the IWC-manufactured 32150 calibre. This highly precise and reliable automatic movement features a pawl winding system and a power reserve of 72 hours.

One version (Ref. IW359002) features an 18-carat 5N gold case, a silver-plated dial, gold-plated hands, solid gold appliques, and a taupe calfskin strap. The second model (Ref. IW359001) is presented with a stainless steel case, a silver-plated dial, gold-plated hands and appliques, and a blue calfskin strap. Both references are fitted with straps made of traceable Swiss calf leather, boasting a natural and soft finish and a contemporary, luxurious look.

The Portofino Automatic Pointer Date (Ref. IW359201) features a pointer date indication in a sub counter at 6 o’clock. On the analog display, a small hand points to the current date. Every night around midnight, the pointer jumps to the new date. This classic and elegant Portofino features a 39-millimetre stainless steel case, a silver-plated dial, and gold-plated hands and appliques. It is fitted with a brown calfskin strap with a quick-change system.

The Portofino Complete Calendar will be available as of April 2023, while the Portofino Automatic Pointer Date will be available as of February 2023 through IWC boutiques, authorised retail partners, or online at IWC.com. Additionally, they are eligible for registration under the My IWC care program, benefitting from a 6-year extension to the standard 2-year International Limited Warranty.

No complication embodies IWC’s unique engineering approach quite like the perpetual calendar. Developed in the 1980s by former head watchmaker Kurt Klaus and consisting of less than 100 ingeniously arranged parts, the calendar is distinguished by its high level of autonomy and user-friendliness. The intelligent mechanical program recognises the different lengths of the months and automatically inserts a leap day every four years at the end of February. It will continue to run without manual interventions until 2100, when the leap year is omitted due to an exception in the Gregorian calendar. Moreover, since all its displays are perfectly synchronised, the calendar can be advanced simply using the crown.

With the Portofino Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 3444), the iconic complication returns to the Portofino line. Two versions are available. One features a stainless steel case with a silver-plated dial and rhodium-plated hands and appliques (Ref. IW344601) – marking the first time a Portofino model with a perpetual calendar is presented in this classic and robust case material. The other features an 18-carat 5N gold case, a silver-plated dial and gold-plated hands and appliques (Ref. IW344602). The Portofino Perpetual Calendar is also the perfect choice for those preferring a slightly more compact and ergonomic size. With a case diameter of just 40 millimetres, it is currently the smallest perpetual calendar across IWC’s collections. Both versions are fitted with blue straps made of traceable Swiss calf leather. The straps have a natural and soft finish and boast a contemporary, luxurious look.

A HIGH DEGREE OF AUTONOMY 

The calendar information is indicated in three subdials. The date is shown at 3 o’clock, the month at 6 o’clock, and the day of the week at 9 o’clock. The weekday display also contains a small leap year indicator: a red “L” signals a leap year, and the calendar will autonomously insert the 29th of February. Another highlight of this model is the perpetual moon phase display. Integrated into the month display, it shows the moon against the backdrop of a star-studded night sky. Thanks to a precisely calculated reductionist gear train, it is so precise that it will only deviate by one day from the orbit of Earth’s satellite after 577.5 years.

IWC-MANUFACTURED 82650 CALIBRE WITH PELLATON WINDING 

The IWC-manufactured 82650 calibre drives the calendar module using a single nightly switching impulse. The elaborately finished movement can be admired through the transparent sapphire glass back. It features the highly efficient automatic winding system developed in the 1950s by IWC’s former technical director, Albert Pellaton. Using the slightest movements of the oscillating weight in both directions, it reliably builds up a power reserve of 60 hours in the mainspring. Components of the automatic winding system that are subject to high stresses, such as the heart-shaped cam and the clicks, are made of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. In addition, the rotor features the signature “Probus Scafusia” medallion in solid gold, which embodies IWC’s uncompromising commitment to technical excellence, quality, and sustainability.

The entire Portofino Automatic 37 collection is now equipped with IWC-manufactured movements from the 32000 calibre family, featuring an automatic pawl winding system and a power reserve of 5 days. The movements have been elaborately finished with blued screws and gold-plated rotors and can be admired through sapphire glass case backs.

LARGER DIAMONDS AND IMPROVED SETTING 

For the models featuring diamond-set bezels, the shape of the case has been optimised to accommodate larger stones of 1.7 millimetres. The dial and the case of these references are decorated with 72 diamonds totalling 1.12 carats. In addition, because of an improved setting, the diamonds reflect the light better and have a more visible presence and added brilliance. IWC has also applied a new type of sunray finish to the silver-plated dials, giving them a softer and even more refined appearance.

NEW TRACEABLE CALFSKIN STRAPS OR NEW STAINLESS STEEL BRACELET 

IWC places great emphasis on transparency and wants to help ensure that the origins of materials can be traced throughout the entire supply chain. As a first in the luxury watch industry, the company now offers straps made of fully traceable Swiss calf leather with butterfly folding clasps. These straps have a natural and soft finish and boast a contemporary, luxurious look. Each strap comes with a unique code which can be entered in the IWC app to find out more about the source of the leather. Other references in the collection feature a newly developed high-grade 5-link stainless steel bracelet with polished and satin-finished surfaces. This sophisticated bracelet with a modern design is highly comfortable to wear. For the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37, IWC has integrated a moon phase module into a movement from the IWC-manufactured 32000 caliber family for the first time. Thanks to a special reduction wheel train, the display works so precisely that it only deviates from the actual orbit of Earth’s satellite by one day after 122 years. The moon phase disc, located at 12 o’clock on the dial, is made of solid gold and pad-printed with a blue night sky. The display can be adjusted easily in daily intervals using the crown.

Thanks to its reduced case diameter of 37 millimetres, the Portofino Automatic 37 is very comfortable to wear and has become a staple in IWC’s women’s watches portfolio. The Portofino Automatic Day & Night 34 is the first 34-millimetre Portofino with a poetic day & night complication, which provides a particularly charming visualisation of t he p assing of t ime. A d isc a t 6 o’clock rotates around its axis once every 24 hours and indicates whether it is currently day or night. At noon or midnight, the sun or the moon appears in the upper area of the display. The colour of the celestial bodies matches the hands and appliques.

The Portofino Automatic 34 was first introduced to the collection in 2019 and continues the tradition of Portofino ladies’ watches from the 1980s. With this model, IWC offers a casual yet elegant timepiece in an easily wearable size for women. The enhanced versions feature new colour combinations, calfskin straps with a butterfly folding clasp, and the new 5-link stainless steel bracelet.

The Portofino Chronograph 39 Edition “Laureus Sport for Good” is the 16th special edition that IWC has launched in collaboration with the Laureus Sport for Good foundation. Laureus Sport for Good operates in more than 50 countries and supports over 250 programmes around the world. The programmes employ sport to transform the lives of children and young people. They aim to promote social change, and put an end to violence and discrimination.

Limited to 1000 pieces, this timepiece features a stainless steel case in an easily wearable diameter of 39 millimetres. The dial in the typical Laureus blue contrasts with the rhodium-plated hands and appliques. The chronograph is fitted on a black calfskin strap. 

An engraving of the winning entry from the drawing competition that IWC organises each year within all Laureus programmes appears on the case back. The drawing depicts hands united together as equals, and was created by 15-year-old Jatin Malhan.

Jatin is goalkeeper for the Youth Football Club Rurka Kalan in the Jalandhar district of Punjab, India. The programme he took part in empowers and inspires young people to drive change in their communities, promoting tolerance, community spirit and gender equality through sport and education. 

The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier global sports awards honouring the greatest sportsmen, sportswomen and teams across all sports each year. The Nominees are selected by a panel of over 1300 representatives from the world of global sports media.

Portofino has been one of IWC’s most high-profile families ever since its first launch back in 1984. As legend has it, then-head watchmaker and living legend Kurt Klaus and head designer Hanno Burtscher put pen to paper over a glass of wine, devising a simple and elegant watch inspired by the classic rounded designs of the fifties and sixties.

Named after the idyllic Italian village where the jet set summers, the line was - and remains - imbued with a spirit of casual glamour. For men and women, and by day and by night, a Portofino watch is at once sophisticated and subtle. Signature elements, like the sleek style and uncluttered dial, remain just as popular with consumers today.

2019’s new Portofino watches for women are some of the smallest across IWC’s entire portfolio. With a reduced diameter of 34 millimetres, the five new models hark back to the very first Portofino collection which had similarly-sized timepieces for slender wrists, and are available in either in 18-carat 5N gold or stainless steel cases, with silver- plated, blue, or green dials, all of which feature diamonds on the case or dial.

This versatility extends to the inventive strap design, which allows the wearer to customise their watch to their look. A small tool accompanying each product makes it easy to swap between different 12 different strap options - crafted by leather goods maker Santoni - offered in an array of vibrant, hand-coloured shades, in addition to a Milanese stainless steel mesh bracelet.

Portofino’s line for men has been refreshed for this year too, and welcomes six new models to its selection. Arguably, one of the most exciting is the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase, which will be the first to combine a 40mm case diameter and a moon phase complication. Thus far only appearing in 37mm or 45mm models, this new size will be available in two stainless steel variations: one with a silver-plated dial, gold-plated hands and appliqués and a brown alligator leather strap, the other with a blue dial, rhodium-plated hands and appliqués and a black alligator leather strap.

The 2019 launch also includes new versions of the Portofino Chronograph and the Portofino Automatic with blue dials. Both designs will be available in either 18-carat 5N gold or stainless steel, with gold appliqués, gold-plated hands and black alligator leather straps.

Both men and women alike are drawn to the classic appeal of this timepiece, with its minimalistic round case, Roman numerals and simple hour markers that characterise this collection. This is why we are pleased to extend the family with eleven attractive new timepieces,” explained Knoop.

All five of the new Portofino men’s references are now available worldwide. The remaining six women’s references are exclusively available in IWC boutiques and authorised IWC retailers in China and Hong Kong, arriving in boutiques throughout the rest of the world by October 2019.

THE POWER RESERVE DISPLAY REMINDS THE OWNER TO WIND UP THE WATCH

Both models are driven by a 59210 manufacture calibre and boast 192 hours – or eight days – of reliable and accurate running. After this period, the movement stops automatically, although it is designed to run smoothly for nine days. This guarantees a constant driving torque for eight days. The integrated power reserve with separate dial display reminds the owner to wind up their watch at the right time. In addition, the indexless balance has a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour and, together with the Breguet spring, which is wound following an age-old tradition of watchmaking, helps to make the watch exceptionally accurate. The see-through sapphire glass back allows the user to view the movement, adorned with Côtes de Genève.

The robust 79320 calibre chronograph movement enables the watch to be used as a stopwatch and for aggregate timing of up to 12 hours. The minutes and hours are displayed on the two subdials at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. Another useful function is the date and day display. As with all of IWC's Pilot's Watches, the movement is protected against magnetic fields by a soft iron cage, and the glass is specially secured against displacement caused by sudden drops in air pressure in the cockpit.

The Pilot's Watch Chronograph is available exclusively in the USA at iwc.com until September 2018. The watch will be available at other points of sale later.

The Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase Edition “150 Years” (Ref. 5164) combines a classic Portofino Hound-Wound Eight Days with a moon phase display. A total of 150 watches are available in red gold and 350 in stainless steel:

– 18-carat red gold, blue dial with lacquered finish, gold-plated hands (Ref. IW516407)
– Stainless steel, blue dial with lacquered finish, rhodium-plated hands (Ref. IW516405)
– Stainless steel, white dial with lacquered finish, blued hands (Ref. IW516406)

The first version is the only gold watch in the Jubilee collection with a blue dial. The hands, as well as the moon and stars in the moon phase display, have been gold-plated to match. The moon and stars are rhodium-plated on the models with a stainless steel case. With the IWC-manufactured 59800 calibre, a moon phase module has been added to the 59000-calibre family that will deviate from the actual cycle of the moon by just 1 day after 122 years.

The Portofino Chronograph Edition “150 Years” (Ref. 3910) is a special interpretation of the popular chronograph in an anniversary design. Two limited-edition models are available, each restricted to 2,000 watches:

– Stainless steel, blue dial with lacquered finish, rhodium-plated hands (Ref. IW391023)
– Stainless steel, white dial with lacquered finish, blued hands (Ref. IW391024)

The Portofino Automatic Edition “150 Years” (Ref. 3565) is available in two limited anniversary editions, each restricted to 2,000 watches:

– Stainless steel, blue dial with lacquered finish, rhodium-plated hands (Ref. IW356518)
– Stainless steel, white dial with lacquered finish, blued hands (Ref. IW356519)

The Portofino Hand-Wound Tourbillon Rétrograde (Ref. IW516501) is the first Portofino to feature a tourbillon, with the balance, pallet and escape wheel mounted in a cage that rotates around its own axis once every minute. This constant rotation helps to counteract the pull of gravity so that it does not adversely affect the watch’s rate and accuracy. The newly developed hacking tourbillon enables the watch to be set with down-to-the-second accuracy. IWC has also revised the geometry of the pallet and the escape wheel, plus it has manufactured the components using diamond-coated silicon, thus reducing friction. This contributes substantially to the power reserve of eight days achieved with the IWC hand-wound 59900 calibre. A retrograde date display and power reserve display accompany the flying minute tourbillon on the dial. The case, with a diameter of 45 millimetres, is made of 18-carat red gold. The dial is silver-plated and the hands are gold-plated; the appliqués are made of ­solid gold. The sapphire-glass back provides a view of the calibre, which is adorned with Geneva stripes.

IWC has integrated a moon phase display into a Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days watch for the first time with the Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase (Ref. 5164). The watch is also a tribute to the Reference 5251 from 1984, another timepiece that was equipped with this complication. When developing the IWC-manufactured 59800 cali­bre, the IWC watch designers enhanced the basic 59000 calibre with a moon phase module that only needs to be adjusted by one day after 122 years. The watch with a case diameter of 45 millimetres is available in two versions – both of which have gold-plated hands. The first version has an 18-carat red gold case, a slate-coloured dial and solid gold appliqués (Ref. IW516403), while the second has a stainless-steel case, a silver-plated dial and gold-plated appliqués (Ref. IW516401). Both models are fitted with a dark brown alligator leather strap by Santoni.

In addition, IWC has finally updated the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 (Ref. 4590). This popular watch is now also available with a silver-plated dial instead of a mother-of-pearl dial, making it blend even more harmoniously with the overall image of the Portofino family. The top-of-the-range model, with a case and Milanaise mesh bracelet in 18-carat red gold, is adorned with a total of 78 diamonds (Ref. IW459010). Two other models are also being released with 66 diamonds on the bezel and 12 on the dial: one in an 18-carat red gold case with gold-plated hands (Ref. IW459009) and the other with a stainless-steel case and rhodium-plated hands (Ref. IW459008). The fourth variant has a stainless-steel case, gold-plated hands and 12 diamonds on the dial (Ref. IW459011). These three watches are fitted with exquisitely finished alligator leather straps by Santoni. 

The new Portofino models with integrated moon phase display are available now in IWC boutiques and from authorized IWC retailers. The Portofino Hand-Wound Tourbillon Rétrograde will be available from October 2017.
