Schaffhausen, 18 March 2018 – IWC Schaffhausen officially launched the IWC Racing Team at the 76th Goodwood Members’ Meeting. With this step, IWC becomes the first watch brand to compete in classic car races with its own team and car. At the wheel of the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL 300 “Gullwing”, David Coulthard took 9. place in the Salvadori Cup. Also at Goodwood, IWC introduced a new member of its Ingenieur family: the Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “76th Members’ Meeting at Goodwood” (Ref. IW381201) in a titanium case features protection against magnetic fields designed in the style of a brake disk and is limited to 176 numbered watches.

IWC has been involved in motorsport for many years. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer is, for example, a partner of Mercedes-AMG, and also supports historic racing events like the Goodwood Members’ Meeting.

The IWC Racing Team will compete in selected classic car races with its Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”. The sports car with doors reminiscent of the wings of a seagull was manufactured by Daimler-Benz between 1954 and 1957 as a road-ready version of the 300 SL race car. It dates back to the same time as when IWC’s watchmakers built the first Ingenieur. The iconic sports car will be driven alternately by David Coulthard, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Jochen Mass, Maro Engel, and Carmen Jordá. The IWC Racing Team made its first appearance at Goodwood in the Salvadori Cup, which was run for sports cars of a type that raced between 1955 and 1960. David Coulthard finished the race in 9. place

Throughout the weekend, guests were treated to the finest in classic motorsport. One of the highlights on the 3.8- kilometer Goodwood Motor Circuit was the Caracciola Sportwagenrennen for sports cars of a type that raced between 1925 and 1935, which was presented by IWC. The winner received an Ingenieur Chronograph Edition “Rudolf Caracciola” (Ref. IW380702). Guests were also treated to off-road rides aboard vintage Land Rovers and were brought close to the action on exclusive tours of the paddocks.

IWC also launched the Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition “76th Members’ Meeting at Goodwood”. This sporty and elegant chronograph in a classic column-wheel design is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69380 caliber, featuring a pawl-winding system and a 46-hour power reserve. Its case with a diameter of 44 millimeters is made of titanium and has crown protection. The silver-plated dial, the black subdials, the black hands coated with luminescence, and the blue chronograph hands create a dial that is rich in contrasts. This sporty yet elegant timepiece is worn on a black calfskin leather strap and is limited to 176 numbered pieces. A soft-iron inner cage protects the movement from magnetic fields. The lower part of the cage is inspired by a brake disk and imprinted with “76”, commemorating this year’s edition of the Goodwood Members’ Meeting.

The original Members’ Meetings took place at Goodwood between 1949 and 1966. The Goodwood Road Racing Club reintroduced the Members’ Meeting in 2014 with the intention to bring back to life the intimacy and sense of camaraderie expressed by the original Members’ Meetings. The event takes place every year in March and marks the start of the historic motor racing season. IWC Schaffhausen has been the “Official Timing Partner” of the Goodwood Members’ Meeting since 2015.

The Members’ Meeting was established by the Goodwood Road Racing Club in 2014. It evokes the atmosphere and camaraderie of the 71 Members’ Meetings held by the British Automobile Racing Club between 1949 and 1966. The Members’ Meeting is an event for those part of the GRRC, where guests have access to all areas in an intimate, relaxed environment. The event offers a unique setting in which to celebrate the historic motorsport season. It is the perfect accompaniment to the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed in July and the Revival Meeting in September
